SANTO DOMINGO. - The government of Taiwan today donated 100 motorcycles to the National Police for use by the Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET), to prevent accidents and expedite traffic nationwide.

Taiwan Ambassador Isaac Tsai said the donation forms part of his government’s international attendance program, aimed at bolstering the relations of friendship and cooperation with the Dominicans.

He said the 100 motorcycles donated are worth US$132,825.

Taipei had also donated around 15 Harley-Davidson motorcycles to the Santo Domingo Municipal Police in 2,000, but the lack of maintenance quickly turned them into junkers.

How about setting up a maintenance facility in DR and training some Dominicans to do the work? Then these contributions will make better sense.

These motor cycles will eventually end up in a chop shop owned by a colonel's son who is selling of the parts.

Why would they set up a maintenace program, that makes no sense at all.
Some other idiotic country like Taiwan or Canada will probably donate some new equipment and the parts will eventually be sold off by a colonel's nephew or son.

Why some countries donate things to DR? Because DR's government is asking for it. Furthermore, those richer countries always assume the DR government is telling the truth.

unfortunately, DR government is abusing other countries to its trust.

Regrettably I have to agree that not many of these bikes will be seen in action unless they are ahead of a car carrying some politician .They never are seen except in the shade under some overpass .
The notion of looking after machinary or roads or parks is almost non existant in the DR and I can see no reason why it will be different this time ,Not often I agree with JinH but this time yes

$132,825 for 100 motorcycles? Are they used? That is only $1,328.25 per motorcycle. Must not be much of a fleet. 100?! Maybe they are already cannibalized! Preventative maintenance is non-existemt in the DR when it come to equipment and automobiles. This will be a waste of resources. I bet these 100 bikes can not be fully accounted for in 12 months. They will be stolen, sold, or sold for parts in less than 12 months. wonder how the DA offices are doing with their brand new 35 pick up trucks they recently recieved? I wonder how many are still in one piece and without damage?

Best way to improve highway safety with those Chinese bikes is to keep them off the road.

This subject of receiving from other countries and maintenance was brought up before. Did the DR government "beg" for them. Doubt it. If you recall, there were articles of Taiwan getting involved in DR. Police presence and security was probably part of the discussion. In Taiwan, given the population and traffic, motorcycles are largely used by police.
Now of course, DR doesn't need more junky motorbikes on the roads, nor policemen without helmets driving them as if they were stunt stars.
About the maintenance, this is a basic step for long term use of anything. It also trains people in a trade. Not much long term vision for the development of the country with comments suggesting that other countries will just give more when these are finished! Who will do the maintenance of the subway?

canadafriend, as long as some silly countries keep giving stuff to third world countries like the DR, they will never appreciate the value of treating the gifts with due respect. if they had to buy it from their own budgets, maybe they would learn the value of maintenance and care. however, the DR gets these episodic gifts, which are either stolen by the political directorate, or left to rot under shade trees. when that happens, they simply plead poverty, and get another hundred. what a way to run a railroad.

Basta, really, why would Harleys be welcome down in the DR? Crap roads or dirt roads with idiots driving crap scooters or or crap cars. Guess you can't get out of the country - or you're just too afraid. You probably never even had a ride on a beautiful Harley Davidson. You just sound stupid and jealous.

To Basta re: his remarks about the HD being "USA crap".........

I would love to challenge you to a battle of wits but my father taught me to never pick on someone that was unarmed.

There is no sense in being stupid unless you show it - and you did.

Get a clue.
