SANTO DOMINGO. - Haiti president René Preval said Saturday that the ex dictator Jean Claude Duvalier’s fate is in the hands of justice, and that the former “president for life” was allowed to return to his country because that nation’s Constitution prohibits exile.

In a press conference after an unannounced meeting with president Leonel Fernandez, the Haitian leader said ex president Jean Bertand Aristide runs the same risk, while rumors say he’s in Cuba awaiting authorization to enter his country.

Preval, who arrived aboard a helicopter in the National Palace, said Duvalier is under house arrest in Haiti and that his Administration adhered to the Law by proceeding on the charges pending against him.

The former dictator, who was overthrown 25 years ago, returned to Haiti unannounced last week, stoking that nation’s years of political turmoil.

Preval and Fernandez spoke about Haiti’s political crisis and cholera epidemic in his National Palace office from 1:20 to 4:20 p.m., in the company of Haiti Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive, and returned to Haiti after the press conference.

Local media have speculated that Preval’s visit seeks to secure exile in Dominican Republic, after he leaves office in the next few weeks.

René Preval embarrasses himself on the world stage every chance he gets. The man is a clueless dimwit that's not worthy of managing a candy store.

ScandiViking, nothing emanating from ateo surprises me. he is a mental midget, and an embarrassment to any civilised society. he claims to be on the verge of entering an institution of higher learning, but he forgot that one has to have lower learning first. he is a low grade moron of no mean order, who is best suited for participating in bar brawls, not exchanges of academic ideas.

LEONEL embarrasses himself on the world stage every time he trying to play Mr,hero. LF is a looser. Stop wasting the time making meeting with the Haitian presidents, instead start making plans to get all the Haitian off the DR land morron.

LF most certainly does not embarrass himself or the Dr when he travels...it is one of his very strong points ... he made an error , in my opinion, in becoming involved with the Honduras leadership problem and I agree with antonioj that it would be better to stay out of Haiti politics

Ric,
Agreed that LF did not need to stick his nose into the Honduras issue. However, the DR and Haiti are linked, regardless of any political position.
As long as his message to all involved is firm, consistent and in the best interests of the DR, he should be stepping up.

ScandiViking,

Self critisism? , are you f**** dumb or are you just pretending to be dumb ? last time I checked I wasn't in that photo. I'm not sure about LF being as corrupt as Preval, but I would put my bets that Preval is the biggest careless dichead head of state on the region.

Preval is running scared after his latest fiasco of letting Baby Doc enter the country. I assume that the US is mad as hell for this backdoor maneuver, and BTW the US cancelled the visas of many of his administration's officials, and probably his own.
The sudden and unannounced trip to see LF, was to ask for "sanctuary" and possible residence permit in the DR, after the smoke clears in Haiti, and to ask LF to intervene in his behalf with the "blancs" that were slapping his wrist and yelling: bad boy.....bad boy!

Speech made by OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza:
"Although Dominican Republic's level level of development is far beyond Haiti's, it's still a country of the developing world, with its needs & problems in education,health".."It's a burden for (D.R.) that the International community must somehow mitigate".."so there must be more support since there's THE NOTION (writers emphasis) that some of the Haitian population's problems or a part of them are solved in the Dominican Rep." The Secretary General, who is from Chile, eloquently pointed out this fact on Nov. 4, 2009 months before the earthquake in neighboring Haiti.
