Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s top rated windsurfing beach, Playa Encuentro, in Cabarete is in the crosshairs of drug traffickers who covet it to develop their “business”, while land grabbers covet it for private gain.

A source who didn’t want their name revealed said to DT that they were forced out of their home and business by drug traffickers who even threatened to kill them if they didn’t abandon it, while surfertoday.com today said it’s concerned with losing it to unnamed people interested in privatizing it.

“Playa Encuentro one of the best wind and surf spots of the Dominican Republic, is threatened by the privatization of the country's beaches,” the Website said.

It said it will be a disaster for the entire area of public access is denied. “Wave riding is the main reason people visit Cabarete and is one of the main marketing tools of the North Coast,” and has launched an online petition to defend Encuentro.

The row over Playa Encuentro is shaping to be the next battleground in the economic war pitting developers against conservationists, which defeated the planned cement plant near Haitises National Park

A few monhs ago I wrote ih this forum what Playa Encuentro was and had been for years: a nest of rival gangs of extorsionists, traffickers and murderers.

I told the story of Sonny Bluesky who was forced to tranfer his brand new house at gunpoint, was put in the trunk of a car and never seen again.

The mayor, the police are either afraid or most likely in on it and do nothing to get rid of those thugs.

Dodge City, man.

to summarise, WalterPolo, it is just the Dominican Republic in microcosm.

Drug traffickers and corrupt politicians, police, and military go hand in hand in the Dominican Republic so expect no safety since the people supposedly there to protect people and enforce the laws are the worst criminals. If LF were a real leader he would step up and do something in these high profile cases. His lack of actions speak loudly about where he stands and his business dealings on our island.

All we can hope for is a new leader to fix our corruption problems and go after our previous leaders for the criminal acts they have committed. One day maybe we can round them all up and take back everything they have stolen from the people.

the problem Vernonica is that there is a fine line between being a president and being a dictator and if a president was to do things at his will then he is really a dictator .
I thinj there are correct procedures but always the local councils are very weak and shortsighted . Everywhere we see developers with strong arm men saying they wil provide employment , build some new roads and probably give a few people who make decisions a 2 bedroom apartment in a development ..and the councils always cave in ....world wide .
We see the destruction of beaches and beautiful coastal areas here and in other caribbean countries , in asia , in Europe and even in places like Bali ..
Cabarete was a very natural and laid back place that was perfect for people in their twenties and thirties and it is a tragedy that anything can happen to a place that has the best wind and surf beach in the world ...hopefully there will be a UN commission again that recommends conservation.

Actually the story of Mr Bleuskyes is not related to Encuentro at all, not even close. Cabarete as become a gold mine for first level investors with no respect for its natural state and the very fabrics that makes them rich. Without the protection of natural water sport like, wind surfing, kite surfing, surfing and sailing and the respect of all level environmental rules such as residual water, solid residual disposal, multi level construction and the closing of natural protected beach access. Cabarete will become a ghosts town with empty million dollar condo with no value and we will be looking at what was once a mecca for natural sport.
