Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Government defended its “sovereign” right to handle foreign policy relations to fundamentally defend its national interest and maintaining a climate of harmony with friendly countries.

The statement by Foreign Relations minister Carlos Morales came Tuesday in response to the Israeli Government’s “deception” with the manner in which the Dominican Government stated its support the Palestinian Authority’s efforts toward statehood by the UN.

He said its sovereignty characterizes Dominican Republic’s treatment with the countries with which it maintains diplomatic ties.

The official said relations with Israel are very good, but noted that those bonds don’t impede Dominican Republic from strengthening relations it maintains with another nation even more, as the case with the Palestinian homeland.

Israeli ambassador Moshe Sermoneta, cited Tuesday by newspaper El Caribe, said for his country, president Leonel Fernandez’s decision to support Palestinian National Authority president Mahmoud Abbas’ effort toward statehood was a “deception.”

Fernandez received Abbas with military honors and decorated in the National Palace.

Long standing relations

“We are a sovereign State, we believe in self-determination of the nations and define our policy in relation to the global topics, without meddling in anybody’s bilateral affairs,” Morales said in a statement to the press.

“Certainly, as ambassador Sermoneta indicates, relations with Israel are good,” he said but noted they are reciprocal bonds, because “whenever Israel has needed us, Dominican Republic has there been.”

Dominican Republic and Israel have had diplomatic ties since 1948 and have always in friendship.

Yes to Palestinian statehood

Efforts to stop the Palestinians from winning statehood at the UN are misguided and self-defeating

Sep 24th 2011 | from the print edition The Economist

"A more secure Israel amid the Arab spring

In truth, Israel will be safer when a proper Palestinian state has been consolidated. That is a point that too few Israelis and their American supporters appreciate. This newspaper has argued steadfastly for the right of Israel to exist. We abhor the creeping delegitimisation and demonisation of Israel. But we also believe that the Palestinians deserve a state of their own. These two beliefs are entirely compatible. By his intransigence Mr Netanyahu has played into the hands of those who would destroy Israel. In blocking any Palestinian aspirations at the UN, America is helping extremists on both sides."

China is funding a US$3.4 billion gaming and entertainment resort in the Bahamas that's being billed as the largest of its kind in the Caribbean.

The 1,000-acre Baha Mar resort is slated to open in late 2014.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Nassau, Bahamas, .

The showpiece of the project will be a 100,000-square-foot casino, which will be the Caribbean's largest, its developers claim.

The resort will also include a 50,000-square-foot retail strip, an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature championship golf course and a 200,000-square-foot convention center.

A 20-acre water park and three spas are being planned on the Bahamian Riviera, along 3,000 feet of pristine beach.

A cluster of hotels run by Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, Morgans Hotel Group, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts and an unnamed casino hotel promises to create 2,250 new room

France contributes 250,000 tourists per year, higher than countries like Germany, Spain, Italy, Great Britain or Russia, according to Jean Marc Harion, president of the Dominican-French Chamber of Commerce (CCDF), during his participation in the "First European Tourism Summit,” quoted by news source diariolibre.com.

Nonetheless the figures don’t mean much for the country’s hoteliers and tourism sector representatives, because they prefer fewer tourists, as long as they spend more and stay longer, said Julio Llibre, president of the National Hotels and Tourism Association (Asonahores), speaking as a panelist in the conference held the Hotel Santo Domingo.

The hoteliers also acknowledged a fall in tourist arrivals from Europe, but recognize that they have to look for alternatives in the Russian market and other zones like South America.

LOOK MY A.....S NOTHING TO LOOK FOR ITS NOT HAPPING, CLEAN UP THE PLACE 1ST, BE A GREAT WAY FOR A START.

Mr. GLOBE TROTTER. And, Is this supposed to make some of us anxious or freak us out?
You seem to derive great pleasure from putting down our nation in every way and criticizing its every move. What is it with you? To date, I have not seen one single positive comment from you.
You are one mean, sick puppy. And, judging from your unintelligible postings, you're also as dumb as they come! Put a cork in it!

Well President Fernandez may believe that the Dominican Republic is an sovereign state and independent country but the truth is that it's the puppet state of the United States. The minute the Dominican Republic makes a move to align itself with any other nation(s) that are not in the interest of the US, that leader will be removed. Don't believe me, just think back to Trujillo and the efforts to kill Castro. The Monroe Doctrine emphatically states that the US have dominion of all the Americas.

I am for planting - why does the Domnican Republic with a huge variance of climates not grow more. The cane fields that are presently un-used could grow corn or a host of other crops and reduce dependency on foreign grown cereal crops for the production of protein (pork, chicken, and to some degree beef and milk). Grapes should be produed in abundance and fine wineries established, first class chocolates produced here. Getting the populace to be gracious hosts to visitors is nice but being more independent makes for better tourism and local's lives. Bahamas has sand and beaches and smiling faces but little else, let them have their casinos, the people who go some where to frequent a casino are not the creme of society though they too tend to similarly float to the top.

Mr. Danny00, or the troll you referred to as GLOBE TROTTER, is an internet molester, not satisfied with bombarding readers with his moronic nuisances, but on top of that he is worse than the Chinese trolls, that bother us persistently advertising their junk.
Danny00 uses up valuable space with his monotonous and tedious verbal incontinence, and he does not get, that he really IS a double zero and major Dominican Today MINUS magnet.

Excellent point DomRat.
I too am for planting. DR should return to the high production levels seen during the Trujillo era.

Regarding the Israel and Palestinian conflict. It's about time Palestine received the support it rightfully deserves from he world. Yes to Palestinian statehood.

Also, India , Brazil and Japan MUST be accepted as permanent members of the UN security council.

I agree with your post, but the UN security council and the veto power of some of its members, is frequently discriminatory of the will of the majority, and it will be more evident in the Palestinian cause.
The veto power of the UN security council has to be revised and updated, to add credibility also to the strategic interests of other nations that compose the UN.

the problem i see with leonilo pulling out the "we're a sovereign State card" is that when it comes to protect our border from the never ending migration, degradation of the environment and traffiking of illegal drugs, guns and people the mother f*cker never say a goddamn thing about it.

he should be put before a firing aquad at the end of his term por traidor y vende patria.

azaroso hablando de soverania a esta altura del juego, despues que se arrodillo y se puso en cuatro y se dejo meter sabra dios cuanto millones de haitianos por la frontera.

What if Danny is right? What would the dominican republic do. The Island is depending on tourism to survive, our farmers grow to pay-off hugo. There are 100's of thousand of graduates and no jobs, la sonna franka is a ghost town. The justice union demands 4.6% and doesn't back the 4% required by law for education. Criminals get caught red handed and release a few days after, rogue military and police committing murder....... the list is too long. How can anything positive come out of all this.

This is a lawless country, who would invest besides criminals, leonel is a whoe and gets into bed with anyone just look at his associates and the entourage he carries. It took leonel 11yrs to visit the slums to listen about what has been done with all the monies.

BUT WE HAVE A METRO!!!

danny00,
DR kids need to get an education at school, not a free meal. Most of the kids around here are over-fed and under-educated. Then maybe people will stop at red lights, not use Polo Rey!
