Santo Domingo. - The first lady Margarita Cedeño will be the vice presidential candidate of the ruling PLD party in next year’s election, the presidential candidate Danilo Medina’s campaign director of operations announced Tuesday.
The also San Juan province senator Felix Bautista said the different surveys reveal that the population favor Cedeño as Medina’s ticket mate, for the May 20, 2012 presidential election.
The lawmaker, in a press conference in PLD headquarters, said “Dominican society is soon going to find out the PLD’s high level of popularity, the candidate Danilo Medina and the first lady, who’ll be the vice-presidential candidate."

In an unexpected development, Medina campaign chief Francisco Javier Garcia affirmed a few hours later that the presidential candidate has yet to choose his running mate.

there are denials floating around, as we speak. if it is true, i would not be surprised. it would be in keeping with Dominican political traditions, wherein the leaders never give up power until they die, or, at the very least, are too old to pee without help.

News is not accurate and has been denied by the director of Medina's presidential campaign.
I was surprised by the false news, as Margarita would certainly not gain Danilo any votes, and quite probably will cause rejection by voters, that are not happy with more of the same.

Margarita can be a good or bad influence for our next president. On one hand, she can press to divert more money for social issues--schools, health, housing, etc. On the other, her husband can induce her to meddle in Danilo's plan to make changes.
She can be a moderating counter to Danilo, and both, the chamber of deputies and senate.
I think she can be an immensely popular VP and, likely, our president, in a not-too-distant future!
Let's see how she does.

If she can generate movement towards the goal of 4% for Education and generally bring some populist swing to the campaign, I don't see her being a liability for the campaign. If she acts High Maintenance and is generally thought as so, she'll be a major burden. Hard to think that the campaign manager won't have her playing those more vote getting roles.

Fernandez' sister, Kirsis, has a penthouse in my building. They are never in DR, yet she collects a salary for being the head of the CONANI project, that is supposed to help street kids.
She will be raking in a pension of about 250,000 Dominican pesos for life when she leaves this post. She and her husband have businesses in Miami and New Jersey, and they are hardly ever in DR.
Why don't people do something about this?
