Santo Domingo.- The violent Sinaloa Cartel stole the twin engine plane from La Isabela International Airport (AILI) at El Higuero to transport two of its members to South America and then take cocaine to Honduras or Haiti, and from there to Mexico, prior to its final destination, the United States.

Newspaper El Dia, quoting intelligence sources, reports that the Sinaloa Cartel operates a cell of drug traffickers in Dominican Republic, where it has also been linked to several execution style murders in the last few months.

The airplane –a Beechcraft turboprop- recovered in Venezuela yesterday was piloted by the Venezuelans Pedro Gerardo and Ramon de los Santos, who work for an important narcotics trafficker.

The ring of narcotics traffickers has managed to elude the authorities thus far although the military and civilian personnel who helped them steal the plane have been arrested. Several days ago the authorities learned of the plane’s whereabouts in Venezuela’s Apure State, on the border with Colombia, found hidden beneath some bushes.

Armed Forces minister Joaquin Virgilio Perez said the authorities are working to get the plane back, and hailed their effort to solve the case, noting that the investigation is ongoing. “The small plane is there, under custory of Venezuela’s National Antinarcotics Office and we're conducting the diplomatic efforts (required) in these cases,” Perez said in Las Americas International Airport, where he went to see president Leonel Fernandez off to Miami.

Had this aircraft not been owned and operated for Grupo Punta Cana I doubt that it's theft would have received as much media attention that it has. The criminals responsible for the theft should have been more aware of the owner as their act has brought them under the spotlight, forcing the government to do a thorough investigation and bring in all suspects. I hope the gov't gets them all.

Why does Dominican Today not verify what it prints electronicaly?
This is not reporting but cut and paste with a little bit of incorrect spelling check.
After all advertisers are paying for promotion of their products and expect to have the news correctly posted.

The DR better get it's sh^t together... if the Sinaloa keeps on growing in the DR, we will def have another Mexico on our hands.. the prob is, DR is small, so the hideous crimes will be felt everywhere...Mexico on the other hand is quite large, and there are still many parts where even there, these things are not felt.

You mistook this page as journalism? The advertisers don't care about the content, just the number of clicks. They don't care about the inane comments, the hatred and prejudice, it's all about the clicks. Thanks for helping!

We have to be very careful with these Mexican cartels, they know that most youth in DR are very easy to influence when you show them all the $$$$$$. Right now I would say Mexico is a bigger threat then Haitians.

Regan,
Absolutely correct!
Was it Churchill who said "people get the newspaper they want and the government they deserve."?

ELPAPA999,
Dominicans need Haitians to do the work that don't want to do, just as Americans need Dominicans and Mexicans. Haitians get American charities to do their work so I guess that completes the cycle?

I certainly hope the Government can get rid of the corruption because the Sinaloa Cartel is the biggest and most wealthy organized crime movement on Earth. The violence that is causing havoc in Mexico will soon become part of the Dominican landscape if something is not done soon. The problem is this cartel has money like the ground has grass, so if corruption continues to be a problem they will literally pay their way until drugs and violence has consumed the entire Country. A very disturbing trend...

The acknowledged presence of this gang is most horrific.
And for anyone to expect the government to prevent their spreading is like expecting an incompetent lifeguard to rescue you during a hurricane.
Nearly hopeless I am afraid.

I have heard much about police corruption in this country, and I do not doubt that some are. However many are not, and are trying to do a dangerous job well, on little pay. They do not get the support, respect and appreciation from the public that they deserve.

@ elrap what does haitian have to do with this story. We talking about a crime that was comited by the lack of security @ an airport which could put annybody in danger.it could have been a terrerorist act. It seems like your gov fail to warn other gov of that act

What a big joke this all is. Sinaloa has plenty of money so anything they want done will be done since we have no justice system just pay and we do whatever you want.

With all the money the cartels make, you would think a "cheap" 2 million dollar plane would not be worth the trouble especially (as in this case) if you are unsuccessful. They coul have just as easily bought their OWN plane and have had much less to worry about. Bad move on their part.

Ambition! A DOminican disease... It is difficult to believe that this aircraft was stolen to make such an amount of noise. With the money allegedly paid to the Army Lt., such an organization like the Sinaloa could have bought a used one in the American market. With the financial power The Sinaloa Cartel has at its disposition to go through the trouble of stealing this particular plane does not seem to make any sense. I invite anyone to put a search Online for a used aircraft and please have a seat because the list is long of all that is available. It is equally unfair to accuse anyone in particular without concrete evidence but I remain waiting for internal investigation of the owner (s) of the craft as well as so called high rank Dominican officials. The arrested junior officer seems nothing more than a sacrificial LAMB (An ambitious inescrupolous foul). Dominican needs to be shaken completely. A lot of missery and A lot of missuse of resources. CLEANING HOUSE IS NEEDED. I dream!!!
