Santiago, Chile. - Latin Americans’ support for democracy fell three points in 2011 to 58 percent, after four years of sustained increase, according to data of the Latinobarómetro 2011 study released today in Santiago, Chile, EFE reports.

It said 58% of the citizens feel that democracy is preferable to any other form of Government, compared with 61% which thought the same a 2010, while 17% prefer an authoritarian Government, two points more than last year.

Latinobarómetro found that weaker support of democracy in the region stems from political and economic factors as well. It also stresses throughout last year, democracy lost followers in 14 of the 18 countries where the poll was conducted.

In Guatemala and Honduras for example, support for democracy has fallen 10 points, to 36 and 43% respectively, while in Brazil it declines from 54 to 45% and from 49 to 40% in Mexico.

Falling support also occurred in Nicaragua (50%), Costa Rica (65%), Venezuela (77%), Colombia (55%), El Salvador (55%), Bolivia (64%), Ecuador (61%), Peru (59%), Chile (61%) and Panama (60%), but the report notes they remained above 50%.

The region’s only countries where support for democracy advanced in 2011 are Paraguay (54%), Argentina (70%), Dominican Republic (65%) and Uruguay, which remains at 75% since last year.

The country which boasts the strongest support for democracy is Venezuela, with 77%, even though it fell seven points compared with last year, while Guatemala has the least, with 36%.

But contrary to Dominicans support for democracy was the study’s finding of a poor job performance for president Leonel Fernandez, who according to Latinobarometro obtains a 36 % approval rating.

Why do they shun him?

Probably because of the impression that they have of his governance which appears to be something like this:

1 for you (the population) and 1 for me (him and the PLD and cronies).
2 for you and 1, and 2 for me.
3 for you and 1, and 2 and 3 for me

Etc. Etc. Etc.

We Dominicans are disgusted with the blind eye Fernandez has turned towards our pueblo. He made friends with the criminal element, quality of life issues have never been worse, crime is out of control, police corruption is at a all time high, taxes, taxes and more taxes, his wife is a thief, the whole family is living off the back of the average Dominican and he cares nothing about us.

LF is a despicable low life a real CANALLA. He should rot in hell forever for what he allowed to happen in my country.

How can you call this a democracy when the elections are bought with money, cement, roofing, jobs and pensions. Who promise the most wins

Martin you make a good point. We need to change the parties. PLD & PRD must go. We need parties for the people. However, it will not happen. Thus we must work within what we have to cause a change.

LF has been a parasite for too long. PLD must be gone. If Danilo wins he will never be able to get rid of the parasites feeding off the pueblo.

We must have a complete drastic change if my Quisqueya is to survive.

I agree that things could be much better but they could also be worse!

Look at what bush did to the USA and the corruption and crimes they committed just ask Sean Penn. Now Obama is spending money and driving them so far into debt that the USA will be a mess for many many years. They cannot pay there bills and borrow to pay them
thank Bush and Cheney for most of the corruption and waste of money and destruction.
I am happy for all the infrastructure projects in the DR and this will be what people remember in years to come. Now JUST FINISH Them please!

Hey people they are all corrupt!

Do not blame the system but the application.
Problem with DR application is that political elite is bribing the people with their own money.
OK, better to say with beans, and even that only during the election campaign.
Once elected you do not get even the beans.

The word government is derived from the Latin verb (gubernare), an infinitive meaning "to govern" or "to manage".

There has been for decades a lack of will to govern in this country. The Domincan Republic has become a country where the garbage is not picked up, (and citizens are worse, they seat to eat and
drink on top of the garbage and even add to it.), The traffic laws are not obeyed, nor imposed, (imagine that you have to fight with people in the street to move forward driving.

You can not even drive to a green light, without somebody taking your right risking your life), the traffic police has no will to control this problem (There is not pride in serving the nation, if you can call it a nation).

To add to this, "about the 4% for education", any advancement in education is reduced by the lack of the professionals to correctly speak their native language, Spanish with (Rs and Ss) even politicians and government officials do not speak Spanish to good standards, not ev

When you give truck loads of money to a political party you expect them to help you and do their bidding by lower tax, contracts, ect, keep the education standard low thus you can pay them less. As said before who promises more wins but also who gets and spends more to promise more wins. When a government is in the hands of the corporations then it helps only the corporation. oh and it's self!!!! and not just the DR it world wide.......

Elections can be bought because people are bought... So who is at fault? isn't it us the people that should put an end to this and stop wanting something in return for voting for a specific party? Sure we can blame the government all we want, but in the end we put these criminals in positions of power!
