Santo Domingo.- The first lady Margarita Cedeño’s statement that society shouldn’t demand more money for education or 4% of the Gross Domestic Product, drew wide rebuke in early Tuesday TV talk shows.
“What we should be demanding, instead of money and more money than what we just finished giving, and 4%, is support for the teachers and improve their quality and capacities,” she said yesterday, when asked the March for Education held Sunday with thousands of people, organized by the Dignified Education Coalition.
She said administrations headed by the PLD party have invested the most in the educative sector, “we have to be very clear that in 2004 we found a budget of RD$11 billion, which has been increased to RD$58.5 billion.”
Cedeño said General Education Law 66-97 establishes 4% as its minimum budget, but the electricity and fuel subsidies which reach nearly 12% of the budget need to be considered, “which makes the increase even more impossible.”
The First Lady, speaking in the Education Ministry said international studies have shown that the educative system is too focused on consumption, “and we must work more with improvement its quality and processes.”
The TV commentators agreed that Cedeño’s statement doesn’t help her chances to get on the ruling party ticket with Danilo medina for next year’s presidential election.

yes and I would prefer that Danilo has a fresh start well away from the LF family so I hope that he can diplomatically say No to Margarita and find a really nice lady to be his number 2

I like the Headline "First Lay"

Escott, why do i know that you would not miss that one? i must say that it is very interesting. first lay, indeed.

Margarita Cedeno is a poseur dunce, who attempts to pass herself off as some sort of academic, stating that the process is too based on consumption. she is apparently trying to suggest that money will not elevate the quality of education, a theme that i support, wholeheartedly. however, she fails to take note of the fact that obscene amounts of money are thrown at political operatives, and the quality of their service is abysmal. senators earning high six figure monthly salaries, for doing absolutely nothing worthwhile does not seem to concern her, not one bit. she should stick to being the First Lay. Leo could use one.

Señor editor, is "lay" a typo or is it on purpose?
The pundits will soon accuse you of being partial, lol.
The first lay will not bring any votes to Danilo, and that is all he is considering, as a matter of fact she might not be seen as a plus by many undecided voters, and will vote against.
Danilo needs a fresh face for VP, not involved in the massive corruption scandals, who will get him more votes.

just shows with the minuses above that people do not want a woman here to be the VP ,,a macho country ??

Loca Diabla: USA since 1970 continued to annually increase education budgets and increase teacher training etc. If I remember correctly in 1970 Democratic Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote a mavelous lenghty report on education. 40 years later they have spent trillions usa money and test levels have continued to go down. The people dont get it. More poor an uneducated, and deliquents you let into the country the worse everything gets. Education worse, Unemployment higher, with more poor and uneducated comes much more crime. I know I lived through all this. DR needs a leader like trujillo

I agree with dreadlocks but I'm very afraid of Hipolito and the return of chaos!

brinbacktrujillo, the world has changed a lot since 40 years ago. the initiatives of Trujillo would not necessarily work today. 40 years ago, the thugs were scared of trujillo, because the military had the weaponry all to themselves. nowadays, guys are running loose with M16 rifles on the back seat of the SUV. 40 years ago, there was no government narcotics complex. it is too simplistic to say that trujillo would be the answer. if he short circuited a shipment of coke for some generalissimo, see how long he would last in the narcotics generation.

I have to say i feel strong dislike for our first lady, all she does is spend tax payers money on new outfits and hats.. her facial expression says it all... And now she opens her mouth to say such stupid things, we need more than 4% if we hope to build a better nation. How many people get paid without performing an actual job, and what about the high salaries some government officials get, why not lower government spending on payroll and increase spend it where it counts. Education should be top priority.

So the government spends more than four times as much to cheapen fuel and electricity, than they spend to educate the country?
That figures!
Reduce the subsidy to what is spent on education and there will not a a civilized little demonstration like last Sunday - there will be civil war!

Just because the situation was worse in 2004, does not make it good now.
Dread (since you can do sums)
11 billion Pesos in 2004 is worth what in today's money, and what percentage of GDP, real and inflated?
I've never met Margarita personally, but going by the photos, she beats my first lay. (Still no match for my current lay I might add.)
