Santo Domingo.- A pair of Israeli spouses businesspersons residing in Dominican Republic were robbed of U$700,000 by several individuals yesterday at the corner of Bolivar and Churchill avenues, the Police revealed Thursday.

The foreigners, whose names weren’t provided, export farm products, were headed to company in the Herrera Free Zone 6pm Tuesday, when they were stopped by the robbers in the assault, witnessed by passers-by, who noted that no weapons were brandished.

The Police said the robbers closed in on two large motorcycles and one vehicle blocked the couples’ auto in what it calls a “lightning action.” Once the Israelis were trapped, the individuals snatched a briefcase with the money after broking the glass on a side window.

Not very believable. Nobody (at least no legit business person) would carry $700K cash in breifcases to conduct a business transaction. Something smells fishy... Where did the $700K come from, a bank? I had trouble gathering $27K USD in two days from multiple bank branches. I guess they did not want to give me my own cash.....go figure... (bought a car)

What are Israeli nationals carrying around that kind of cash. To buy a passport for some seedy characters at Leonels office?
Well the jews were always great exagerators like the Domincans.
This may also have been narco money if the amount reported is correct.

Two women carrying $700,000 in a car and others knew that they had the money and the route they were taking and the cash was in a brief case and there was no man in the car . !!!!!!! We read some tall stories here on DT but this has to be one of the most unbelievable ,has to be an inside job or a scam

I thought people conducted their businesses transactions electronically these days.

How did they come to have all this cash with them? Did they withdraw it from a bank?
If not, they must have smuggle it in. And for what purpose? Drugs? A pay off? laundry? A legit transaction? Doubt it.
These two were up to no good, if it's true they had that much cash on them.
Isn't 700k a little bulky to fit in a briefcase?
All this makes no sense.

Insurance fraud or some stupid people. Never tell anyone you have that kind of money and keep it well hidden. Make yourself look as poor as possible.

It sounded fishy to me so I did some quick math.

$700.000 dollars US Cash would weigh Approx: 151 Pounds.

151 Lbs in a briefcase?

I hate doing D.T.'s work....Not to mention the Police's

This story is total BS...............nothing but a bunch of crap............

First if it is true that they are Israelis, those people are sharp......They don't get swindled that easy.

In Israel both men and women are required to enlist in the military and become well trained soldiers. They are smart as hell and know how to defend themselves

If the story is really true, it was a trap............kudos for the Dominican theives............Although I doubt it very much they were Dominicans.

Correct to those who noted that you couldn't get close to $700,000 US dollars into a briefcase. It would take a good size suitcase. As for citizenship in Israel, a Jew can land in Israel (preferably with a suitcase full of cash but even a briefcase or nothing but debits will even do) and in 24 hours can have citizenship and the perks of much trouble to extradite them all before any military service. Those most dangerous to your financial health normally carry a pen and not a pistol.

A briefcase full isn't really an obscene amount these days, relatively speaking. Assuming all US$100 bills, an average sized briefcase (25" x 18" x 4") could theoretically fit about US$2,400,000. An average attache case (18" x 12" x 4.5") is good for about US$1,000,000. That's precisely the reason why the US treasury doesn't make any bills bigger than $100. Notice, however, that if you fly across the Atlantic it is possible to cram in a briefcase an obscene amount of euros: using 500 € bills and assuming each bill has a thickness of 0.16 mm, a briefcase as described above can hold €6,350,000 (US$8,550,275), whereas an attaché case can hold up to €3,213,000 (US$4,326,304).

Too many baseless claims. None of us know where the money came from because it is not stated in the article so to claim it was this or that is just premature. Perhaps their rich and don't trust banks, maybe their in the drug trade, or were on their way to Bavaro to buy a property cash. Who knows, its all speculation at this point. The only sure thing is that whomever they are and whatever their reasoning it was a dumb mistake to carry that kind of money around without having 5 or 6 jipetas following you to make sure nothing happens. Heck, I wouldn't carry that kind of money around even in the safest places in the world, much less our beautiful streets.

70 packets of 100 bills do NOT weigh 151 lbs.

I always take cash to closings and that is NOT unusual here. I have often carried lots of money here but never will anyone else know about it and I have never had a problem in more than 50 times and neither has anyone else I know.

Would like to hear the real story but I guess that is not going to happen here but life goes on.

Remember foreigners, when traveling in Lie-onel Fernandez’s Failed Narco State use the METRO, we spend more money on its security than we spend on the security of the border with Haiti!

Josean-You are so right. The Metro is Leo Fdz pet project. He babies it as if it were a matter of life and death. All vital resources of the DR are exclusively directed and focused on this underground project and everything else in our is neglected.

This kind of reminds me of when I was living in the North East US. I remember how the members of the US black community put so much value on driving a fancy and expensive car, wearing loud but expensive clothes. While in the mean time they neglect everything else in their lives. There kids have low performance in schools and live within realms of filth and crime infested neighborhoods, oblivious to what surrounds them. It is a ghetto mentality. Does this mean Leo has a ghetto mentality?

It is the same anywhere around the world even in the most richest of countries just the United States where you have people with a live and survive only for today mentality.
