Santo Domingo.- Newspaper El Dia Editor-in-chief Rafael Molina Morillo editorial today Friday focuses on a bill which in his view, its approval would set a negative precedent.
His statement comes several years after Dominican troops participated in the military occupation of Iraq, on orders by then president Hipolito Mejia, a move many criticized for its potential to draw retaliation from radical Moslem groups, specifically al Qaeda.

I totally agree with the articles writer. Belonging to the UN assures a voice in world affairs but only the veto nations have real clout as it matter little what all the nations of the world desire if a single one of the veto holding nations says no. Many are the attempts to reign in Israel to no avail as the US goal tends for them. UN and NATO troops become the bloody handmaiden of vulture capitalism, look at what happened to the “no fly” zone resolution. It turned into a full scale assault on the government of Libya. Most countries will do better off straightening out their own problems. Where would America be if there had been a bit more assistance/interference from Britain to aid the Confederacy?

There is no political or strategic advantage for the DR troops to serve as pseudo soldiers of the UN or any other entity.
The Swiss in their ultimate wisdom have not entered military alliances since the middle 1800's with the exception of the Vatican's Swiss Guard. They are members of the UN and maintain a neutral nation status. The DR should declare itself a neutral nation, there is more to gain.

The Country recieves money, equipment and services for their services and the troops are exposed to modern equipment and capable leaders. . And a very large check is written. They are not infantry nor were they combat troops but transportation troops. The country needs to moderinse it's military to world standards to weed out corruption and find new leaders capabe of the job. Most of the generals have never operated a large unit and have no idea what to do if a natural disaster struck. And using old ancient equipment would be a great disadvantage to the people. Is there a portable bridge available to cross a river or heavy equipment needed to open a road closed by a mudslide? Trucks that can wade thru flooded streets to rescue stranded people? All that is available thru the US surplus for the asking

It begs the question, what does the Dominican Republic, of for that matter, any country need a military for anyway?
For generations we have been sold the idea it is to protect our citizens from foreign attack. However in reality it is about protecting the government. In modern times, most occupying forces have no interest in harming citizens, only taking control of the government. In some cases the military is there to protect the government from their own citizens.

I think they should deploy them rather than having them standing around idley guarding El Malecon or some generals house. It would definatly give themsome experience even if it is on an administrative or logistical assingment. Maybe other nations will turn around and try to give more aid and training t the military if they see more participation.
