San Jose de Ocoa, Dominican Republic.- More than 50 San Jose de Ocoa province (south) organizations who independently began repairs on the mountain city’s only highway Tuesday said they’ll not sit and wait any longer and will continue the work because that span cannot continue in its current state.

They reiterated a call to authorities to keep their promises mande more than four years ago. The voluntary crews headed by the Ocoa Standing Foundation, farmers, drivers and community leaders arrived early morning to start working on the deteriorated section from Ocoa to Cruce de Ocoa, with one front end loader, picks, shovels, machetes, wheelbarrows, trucks and other equipment.

“We cannot sit and wait to solve this urgent problem of the community any longer, we invite the authorities to accompany us or better yet keep their promise to the town of Ocoa,” they shouted.

They said the highway, just like most of the roads are in bad condition since 2007, with no concrete actions from the government, adding that they’ll forge ahead with volunteers and of the community’s contributions “as father Luis Quinn taught us for more than 40 years.”

They ask support for their radio-TV-marathon slated for Friday.

The same thing should happen with the Carretera Turistica from Santiago to Puerto Plata and Sosua. The government just seems to ingnore this important connestion road between the north coast and Santiago. The road is in such a deteriorated condition that only heavy duty offroaders or mules can pass the road even though it used to be the fastest connection just 8 years ago.

Just wondering why the government is collecting taxes from these municipalities if they have to do their own roads. Just shamefull for a government which wants to be reelected again.

I believe the proper thing to do is deduct all construction cost and expenses from tax revenues generated by the municipality

guillermone,
Do municipal councils pay tax to the federal government?
In most countries, net cash-flow is in the opposite direction.
Perhaps you mean federal taxes payed by individuals and companies within the municipality?
It would never be allowed because of the enormity of the precedence set.

The hard working people that gave their time and effort towards this project should be paid very well. In fact ,with all of the drugs and money that the government has seized,it's time for them( the government ) to pull the yellow strips of adhesive off theirs backs. Man up for a change and do the right thing,to atleast gain a positive perspective in the eyes of the public.
