Santo Domingo.- The Chamber of Deputies Justice Commission will hold public hearings to discuss the bill would create specific zones for sexual workers, or the so called “red light district.”
Commission president Demóstenes Martinez said the hearings will be held in Congress’s National Assembly 10am Friday, when any citizen or organization can state their view on that topic.
Speaking in Congress, the lawmaker said a definitive date to introduce the bill in the Chamber has yet to be set, but noted that the piece will be dealt with carefully.

To even think about it is unjust, might as well pull out the welcome mat for all sex offenders and child molester like in one of those asian countries selling under age sex to old white guys with greenbacks .
I can only assume that one of the politicians has his hands in the trade. We can have a red light district, but, no education....NOW THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT OUR COUNTRY....
Leo's next venture is to build the biggest cabana compound on the block right next to the strip and maybe even connect the metro to it with day passes and incentives for the hose for accepting.....what the heck, he might even push for a under age prostitution act that will allow the prostitution of young girls and boys of prostitutes that were born into the business , as long as they keep them away from the books and he will not accept any of them learning the value of SELF-WORTH.
That should complete leo's plan to have HOSE , DRUGS AND HOTELS...oh yeah.. the metro too

Great idea! Although, I vote for the "Red Light District" be confined to only a small area. Lets say, 2 blocks South of Av. Mexico on Dr. Delgado and Two blocks East of Dr Delgado on Av Mexico. !!! A good benefit would be it would be well lit during evening hours, even when there are apagones across the CAPITAL!

We already have two districts for women of the evening to work.
One is called the National Palace and the other is where the senators and deputies meet.

Do you think Dominican Women will work in this so called "RED DISTRICT"?
-- I don't think so , because of the cultural background of DR.
DR government never looks into the things in detail manners and find out the real causes, they are so ignorant to look at things in superficial ways and never figure a way to solve the real root problems.......

If the Gov't is gonna get involved in where they work, before you know it they'll have unions and free medical services like they do in Europe. Well, at least the establish the district by my cabanas....

Not to mention all the crime associated with legal prostitution all located in one location.

The most civilized countries have legalized prostitution and regulate it, ensuring regular health checks, that it is restricted to specific areas to protect children and others, provides better safety for the sex-workers and their clients, and prevents under-age prostitution.
The only losers are the criminals and pimps that would otherwise run it.
It need not be at the expense of education funding, if it is taxed and hence revenue neutral or even revenue positive for the government.
No doubt the churches will oppose it.

riosm,
Why hide their past? Aussie guys, unlike Dominican machos, don't need their woman to pretend he is the first, only the best. (In my case, no need to pretend).
Getting enough money for an education is better than half a bottle of Brugal for a boink in the back of the Jeepeta.
From: United States
All this will do is encourage young girls to put aside any interest in getting an education so they can make "fast cash" selling their bodies. It will also no doubt increase more unwanted pregnancies, crime, and attract sex offenders and other perverts. Prostitution has to be DISCOURAGED, not encouraged. So the Government can't spend more that 3% on Education, but see no issue with encouraging MORE prostitution in the Dominican Republic which already has one of the highest percentages in the world. Seriously?? I don't understand the reasoning of those who are supposed to be directing the Country towards better things, not towards more misery and crime.

BernardJeanPierre, young girls are more likely to use condoms with a paying client than with their macho boyfriend, hoping to trap him into marriage with a baby. She's less likely to get pregnant and more likely to get and education, rather than a Baby Shower. Also criminalizing prostitution does not stamp it out, it only makes is run by criminals.
Don't worry, the legislation will not be successful. It will be blocked by Xtian bigots like you.

Absolutely, Roy. Better the government get into the pimp business than macho abusers who'll keep the money and provide mistreatment and zero health care. Presumably the govt, will regulate the trade and make things safer, lessening stds and protecting all involved.
I have a hard time justifying prostitution, but in poor countries like DR, it's almost necessary for women to survive. Some may find it filthy and repulsive, but the alternative, (no real jobs, no income, no food), is obviously, distressing, maybe even unbearable.
I feel sorry for them!

If a foreigner wants a Dominican girl friend in the DR, he is gonna have to 'help her' by giving her money.
