Santo Domingo. – Opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía has 47.9% of the preferences and Danilo Medina, of the ruling PLD, 42.6%, says a Gallup survey published Monday by newspaper Hoy.

The pollster Gallup Dominican Republic conducted the field work between November 11 and 14, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8%.

The survey conducted “face to face” interviews with a group  people selected by a stratified and multi-stage proportional sampling, and found that Mejia’s rejection rate is 36.5%, to Medina’s 28.8%.

Gallup said the PRD’s candidate remains on top but Medina rose 9.1 points, compared with the last Gallup-Hoy survey conducted at the end  August, when Mejía figured with 47.9% of the votes to Medina’s 33.4%.

The thought of Mejia back in power is frightening, the devil is a better option.

Zooma please explain why? I live here. I am not a fanatic of either candidates. I will tell you that during the 4 yuears HM was President the quality of life was better. There was less crime in the barrios. Lower taxes. Prices were lower. More money in the street as we Dominicans say.The Military and Police did not stop and demand money as they do today. The delinquents were not the owners of the street and the viciosos were not walking as though they have license to do so.

Please explain. When was the last time you walked in my country?

HM is no Saint but what LF has done to RD is horrible. We need to rid our country of the PLD and the tentacles to crime. LF is canalla and despicable. He has been the worst President in the history of RD.

Carmen your memory is deceiving you ...the poverty was horrible, the corruption was horrible and the roads were horrible and HM is an uneducated villain and proved it over and over again ....if only the 2 parties could find someone decent

They are both showing the total disregard that all politicians have for the pueblo.

The streets and highways are already littered with their "beauty contest" photos. How many millions do they waste putting their moronic likenesses on every pole in the country.

Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

None of those guys is suited for the job. Like all other politikeros, they'll sink the country in deeper and make Dominicans' life miserable.

The situation is hopeless.

I am not voting to be honest. I know this is not the right attitude, but I don’t see a reason to do so.

Hipólito Mejía

Are you for real people? If you think it is bad now just wait until he gets back in!

Very well said WalterPolo! Unfortunately, This seems to be a vicious cycle in Dominican for Dominicans. By now the people have been conditioned to this horrific way of thinking "That's how it is" so status quo. Perhaps, the better prepared, academics, more so the media within the country should start to re educate the population to think independently and open their eyes to reality. When is enough enough of buying the people with a few $ Pesos for their vote? It is rape of the people to buy them and them sink them into further misery. Poverty is exercised and gone in the Dominican Republic. Misery seems more like the norm. It is clearly evident that when the people's voice sound actions are taken. So let's educate the people to think clear and free and then we will see changes in these characters so called politicians. Any Joe who knows this or that other person can come from whaterver hole and become a chief to run further ruin on the people. So people you have the power. EXERCISE IT

How did Lionels first term compare to this one? There is undoubtably a learning curve. I am sure HM is aware of errors made, I just hope him puttting BankInter brass behind bars was a mistake due to the bankers ganging up on him to ruin the peso and his administration. He borrowed less than LF by a huge sum, he was a bity too cozy with the U.S. however.
Recognition of the upsurper in Venz. short lived coup against Chavez was a huge mistake, sending troops (men in uniform are troops even if manning the chow line) to Iraq/Afganistan another.

Excellent DomRat!
Please I hope as well that Hipolito Mejia learns from his previous mistakes and this time come with a stern plan. Dominican should be for the Dominicans. Yes he threw the towel in his previous term within and without (Craziness with the US). But at the same time how much longer is Dominican going to continue twisting and turning as the US dictates? Does Dominican remains (True or not) a free state? If it is to continue following all by the ways of the US then let's become another state.
I do not recognize anymore what is true Dominican and what is copy cat. Pathetic!

It doesn't matter who wins, we are doomed either way. I know I will get trolled by saying this, but we need a Trujillo to put order in this god-for-saken country.

lcabrera,
I think many would agree that a benevolent dictator is required. The problem is, they rarely if ever remain benevolent, and you end up with a malevolent kleptocracy.

You other people who feel Hippo can learn. You have to have a brain to learn and Hippo is just a total embarrassment to the DR on every level.

DEAR CARMEN

Have you no memory? The peso went from 16.75 to 53 pesos in 2 years. There were no prices on products because they were changing every day. A famous quote of Mejia "Let them eat Yuca" when prices of food were doubling every day.

You think things are bad now? Give Mejia a year to fluck up the works and you will see 100 pesos to a dollar.

I hate Leonel. He is nothing but a Hippo with Hair. There are no good answers here as the choice sucks. I will probably write in Micky Mouse who couldnt do worse.

Escott,
"Let them eat yuca" ...And what should we say? What should have been done? Why permit sequestration of produce/food for price manipulation? When sequestration occurs there is only one loser THE SO CALLED PEOPLE................. The under dogs may not even suffer or feel pain anymore. Pain is a norm! Pain is a way of life!
Perhaps this so called PEOPLE should be informed to make a self determination and end result decision with those who abuse such control over them.
I am not a Hipolito defender but rather some kind of Dominican descendant who still dreams about a better Dominican.
I wonder what is worst to set merchant loose so they can set sky high prices rampantly to an unaffordable point of have the president fight them and blockade those efforts of price speculation?
Pardon me. I don't want to erase the above but I just remembered that in Dominican we are on a dash run to become millionaires at any cost.
If I and those closed to me eat who cares about the rest?

Whatever Carmen Reyes is smoking must be great stuff, to say things were better during Hippo's tenure is beyond stupidity.

Dollar exchange rate: 1 x 60 pesos

Supermarkets were called " La Casa del Terror" (Hunter House).

Drugs were pretty much legal, since you never saw 1 single drug bust in those 4 years and Quirino's chopper parked next to Hippo's after he was made Captain of the armed forces, Hippo even built him a private airstrip so he could send more drugs to the US.

Not a single project of infrastructure was built, not even a sidewalk, much less a road.

Endless lines of people trying to buy gas to cook on a weekly basis.

Lionel is not a saint but the lesser of two evils, I think Danilo deserves a chance, not holding my breath but given the alternative, it's a no brainer. Glad to see the trends favor Danilo, he gained 9 points since last poll while Hippo lost 7, some polls even have them tied which is a huge improvement, we'll see.

Icaberra, Yes we need a Trujillo, WHAT pleasure it would be for this old woman to see the Haitians fleeing Santiago for thier homeland.

There is no easy solution. I do not see either candidate as worthy. Poverty? I see extreme poverty and magnified by the poor Haitians infiltrating Cibao.

HM is no genius, for sure. Medina obviously is not either or he would have distanced himself from the stench of LF and the insipida wife. Yet, HM is hungry to make himself look good. He can listen and I have met him several times. He has more opportunity to do good than Danilo. PLD has done irreparable damage to RD.

I believe HM will, if he is truthful, make some changes and address the Haitian problem in Cibao. It is alarming to see the Haitian illegals living as they do and the trouble they bring.

Danilo Medina is an excellent presidential candidate. Al Gore distanced himself from Clinton back in 2000 and that's the reason why he lost. To distance yourself from a leader such as Leonel Fernandez, the president of the country AND the political party, is a huge mistake. As unpopular as he may be right now, he has a HUGE following.

For those who know who Hipolito was and all the harm he and his government caused, you can rest assured that he will never be the president of DR or anything else for that matter, ever again.

You read it here first, folks!

From: Dominican Republic, I dislike all politicians and their afiliated parties... "I simply say it AS IT IS!!"
No enterprise would like to pay more for a dollar. Nonetheless, The U.S.A dictates who comes and goes?

Probably Hipoloco has a chance for the fact he is much easier to control and allow the U.S to do whatever they want. On the other hand, there's so much money to be lost so it's rather contradicting.

Over all, the right thing to do is keep PLD in power!!
