Santo Domingo.- The Presidency’s Antinarcotics Adviser Thursday said instead of generalizing, British ambassador Steven Fisher should name, through Dominican Republic’s Foreign Relations Ministry, the company he said abandoned the country because of extortion.

Marino Vinicio (Vincho) Castillo said it’s not ethical to say that companies came to invest in the country and then left, neither identifying them nor the officials who allegedly extorted them for bribes.

In his view it could’ve been a case in which those companies sought excessive benefits, but across the desk found an honest official willing to enforce the law. “Such an affirmation, without stating what it is about, nor identifying the names of the companies and the official, is disturbing.”

The official, interviewed in an activity organized by the Ethics and Anticorruption Commission with the CDP and SNTP press unions, said the good investors come to the country and comply with what Dominican laws stipulate

Fisher yesterday complained of the country’s lack of security for the foreign investment and denounced that a British company had to leave because it was being extorted.

Entity wants proof

Justice and Transparency Foundation (FJT) president Trajano Potentini today also called Fisher denunciation serious, and asked him to submit proof.

Why is it required that foreigners name names...but when national government scandals occur...names are kept quiet?

I wouldn't mind if he said the names. Shame these men, even though they have no shame. If it's done at least it'll be in the record. I work in a MAJOR hotel and I was speaking to the VP of the place, a real heavy and he mentioned some hotel he went to in Punta Cana. He gave the place such a low rating that I was embarrassed to even say I was Dominican!!!

Exactly Mike!

Crocodile Tears:

“Such an affirmation, without stating what it is about, nor identifying the names of the companies and the official, is disturbing.”

Marino Vinicio (Vincho) Castillo, Lie-onel Fernandez ideological godfather, has made quite a good living of rumor mongering and innuendo. Now he attacks others claiming they do what he does as an art form.

So at best this is case of the Pot call the Kettle black; although, it is said that Mr. Castillo suffers from nightmares ever since he was publicly challenged by Gloria Peña.

So what if some British investor pulls out?
After Leo's world tours promoting this magnet for foreign investors, we have far more companies wanting to invest here than we need, don't we?

Speaking of corruption and its synonym Lie-onel Fernandez:

“TOY JARTO ( the organization called I Am Fed Up) requested 36 audits from Chamber of Auditors”

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic- The civic organization TOYJARTO submitted on Wednesday a request for 36 audits to the Chamber of Auditors of the Dominican Republic, under law 200-04 that stipulates free access to public information.

All a total storm in a tea cup...any company with any research knows that there is a need in the DR to grease palms and to pay people to have the business run smoothly ,,,and in fact the British embassy would be givibg out this advice ,,nothing too unusual about that ...If this young Fisher thought it worthwhile to say something that everyone already knows he could have been a little specific....
But for Vincho , the greatest generalist in the government to critisize anyone for not being specific is simply stupid ...just as was his blaming of the USA for protecting figueroa .
If you are want to do business here ,,you play by the local rules ...like Ferreteria Americana and dozens of foreign businesses

Ricardolito,
Maybe bigger companies can do the research, but for small, individual investors it's not so easy. How can you budget for corruption and theft? Does the embassy have a schedule?

The British embassy is specifically there to assist the smaller investors but having met a few of them ..in their annual golf event ,,I doubt if they are of much value ..and the budget is a slush fund .. There are thousands of small and large businesses operating in the DR by simply playing by local rules,,,unfortunate but no way around it ,,,
In fact I deal every day with small companies owned by foreigners ,,, The ambassador will probably be recalled ..and Vincho should be retired

Another slap in the face to Lie-onel Fernandez and the modern, globalist, neoliberal PLD and their supporters:

Costa Rica wins lawsuit against Dominican in WTO

A panel of experts from the World Trade Organization (WTO) considered irregular the imposition by the Dominican Republic of a tariff of 38% to trade in polypropylene sacks and the tubular fabric.

I guess if you can’t run with the Big Dogs of "Free Trade" you better stay on the porch!

What the F are you idiots talking about. Whether or not the allegations are true. It's no secret that there is no such thing as an Honest Dominican on the Island. This should actually be taken to greater lengths, by promoting a world wide boycott of foreign investment in DR. By participating in any exposition or conference where Dominican Govt seeks participation for promoting investment in DR and exposing the DR as a cestpool of corruption a mediocre business culture and incompetent government. There should be active campaigns against the Dominican Republic's corrupt government, practices, and institutions. Maybe that type of action will get Dominicans it's government and all the hipocrits standing on the sidelines motivated to take action.

"but when national government scandals occur...names are kept quiet?" I can agree with PuntaCanaMike on this one.

Vincho Castillo may be the sort who fills the stereotype of he who shouts the most has the most to hide, a cultural behavior when one is called on the carpet for improper actions he will blame everyone including the kichen sink for his bad actions rather than take responsibility. If anyone has viewed "Caso Cerrado" with Dr. Ana Maria Polo knows the loud blowhards are usually the guilty ones.

This fool is only deflecting blame to avoid the hard truth that foreign investors are fedup with the institutionalized extortion rackets in the country. One only has to read about alleged ring of extortionists posing as police and government officials trying to scam the resort owners in the east of the country to know there is some truth in what the ambassador states.

i dont think its in his best interest to name names, some people here in DR like gov officials have a tendency of sending hitmen after someone that might damage their name. it would be nice if the ambassador named a few names but he might get in trouble unfortunately

It is difficult to even run a small business here. Every day people came into my business with their hands out.

The thing that most scares me is the legal system. Dominican hits a gringo in a car in the rear end on a motorcycle the gringo is made to pay. This is just wrong. These people are all CRAP.

If Dominicans werent so corrupt maybe more foreigners would open a business here.We have a perfect place to open many businesses but while everyone is trying to steal the profits from the foreign investors word gets out. People sell those businesses and leave.Eventually no more come after hearing how badly things worked out for others.
