Moca, DR.– A fight among inmates at Dos de Mayo prison, in the northern Dominican city of Moca, left one dead and three injured, authorities said.

According to the report, the mortal victim was identified as Lorenzo Batista Vargas, a native of Santiago, who was being held pending trial for robbery.

Batista died of stab wounds inflicted by another convict who has not yet been identified, Moca’s chief prosecutor Jacobo Marchena told reporters.

Other inmates got together during the incident and forced the military guarding the prison to scatter those in the fray by firing shots in the air and tossing tear gas bombs in the patio.

The prisons have more than 85% of inmates that have not been sentanced and now one is dead...I am surprised it is not more when there are double the prisoners in the jails than have been planned for . sometimes 20 to 30 to a room and not enough beds and the scum of the country mixing with people who may be entirely innocent but are being denied justice ,,an appalling situation
If these draconian new laws that increase the detention in prison to three years without a case being heard are introduced the problem will simply get worse ...and we are in a police state ,,run by a police force that the public has no confidence in and a legal system that is strained already .

matador,
As the article clearly stated, and Ricardolito confirmed, the victim may have been innocent of any crime, since he was still awaiting trial. We don't know what the fight was over, however even hardened criminals are entitled to a fair trial before receiving a death penalty.

whipmeco,
Perhaps he didn't bribe the warders for interim protection, which I have been told is standard procedure?
Not stupid - downright corrupt!

So when does the death penalty arrive in D.R.? It is only a matter of time. simple economics. Catholic ideology wont prevail forever here

Vivacuba,
The Dominican Republic already has an economic solution. Pay enough money and you walk free - no cost to the taxpayer. Regardless, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any country has introduced or re-introduced capital punishment, Catholic or not.
