Somthing like this. Amsterdam.
Santo Domingo.- Several organizations and representatives of sectors that defend women’s rights went to the public hearing in the Chamber of Deputies Justice Commission Friday, to state their view on the proposed bill to create a red light district in the capital.
The Integral Orientation Center (COIN) rejection the proposed legislation, saying it violates human rights, the Constitution and as discriminatory, and suggest instead that Congress allocate Budget funds so the sexual workers can have access to productive activities.
But the Santo Domingo Hotels Association stated its supports calling prostitution an activity that need to be controlled, while Haina township councilwoman, Jackline Montero, accusing the police of shaking down sexual workers for their money and forcing them to have sex for free.
Today’s hearing is the first for the bill submitted by deputy Esther Minyetti, to ban sexual workers from neighborhoods, historical monuments and commercial centers nationwide. The second hearing was scheduled for next Friday.

No need for this stupid legislation, that will accomplish nothing in reality, except be a distraction for the members of congress to discuss some more important matters.
And I agree with COIN to stop harassing women sexual workers, and leave them alone, their life is challenging enough without all this legal, religious and police persecution.

I support the legalization. People will sell their bodies anyway so why not regulate it and make it safer for them with mandatory condom use and STD tests? Women won't put their lives in danger walking the streets. Instead they can work in a secure building and not worry about being raped, robbed and killed.

This is not right, I refuse to accept..... Now everyone will come to this island and expect dominican women to be of the same caliber. I rather stick to being thought as a Merengue and Batchata paradise not a DRUG-laiden, crotch selling , cabana having dum-in-a-can... I will not have it.
WHY CAN'T WE HAVE LEONEL IMPEACHED ALREADY!!!!!!

Since when did the dominican republic congress, the same dominican republic that voted for balaguer for 3 decades and the same dominican republic that bows down to whatever the catholic church says , became this liberal now approving sex prostitution.

It is appalling to hear about the Police shaking up women for their money and forcing them to have sex simply because those women work the streets. Just finished an argument with some Dominican friends here in Philadelphia. These friends applaud the atrocious acts committed against these women. In my view it is even heinous behavior on part of those Police or anyone who does it. I am not defending the moral aspect of what those women do. Nevertheless in a society like the Dominican Republic where poverty is so high, high level of unemployment, low or no existing resources for such a large part of the population, one should rather ask why the authorities do not develop alternative means for those who work the street? Why not encourage them to other means of generating support for them and their families? With clientele from every strata of society, should prostitutes be considered sub human or second class citizens? Who is Policing the Police? Lawless society?

Right on, PENJO!
The lack of money for schools, The failed majority of young people who never got past an elementary education, the lack of suitable employment, the failed society and government. Etc.
All this and more, contribute to youngsters turning to crime and prostitution. In many ways, they don't have a choice but to do with whatever assets they may have. In this case, their bodies...Pity.

Chompiras,
You are absolutely correct. It makes sense and is best for the protection of women and children, and for those reasons I predicted the Catholic Church's hypocritical opposition. The legislation has no hope of being passed, and is just so the thinking world believes Leo is attempting something right this time.

RonEvane, It is certainly pitiful to see youngsters in such a dire situation. Then it is even more horrific to see they atrocity of the so call officials getting richer at the expense of the UNDERDOGS. One things is, once again, often when this type of subject arises as topic in front of native Dominicans, they seem to be in total denial. The persiut of being "LIKE IN THE UNITED STATES" seems to be priority to them regardless the cost. I remain waiting to read any news source of Dominican relevance where no news of NOW BILLIONS in loans is flashed ahead of anything else. The hunger of the people. The safety and security of the people. MEANINGLESS! As the current president said some years ago "You want to be like the United States I'm going to make you into a little New York". So it has happened! Where is the UN and so call advocates of HUMAN RIGHTS? Where is the world's tribune to adjust those responsible? Who is advocating for the upcoming Dominican generations? Sure not THE OFFICIALS
