Santo Domingo.- Travelers arriving at Las Americas International Airport continue to denounce holdups, this time the victims, Bladimir Corporán and his mother Mercedes suspect police agents.
Quoted by newspaper Listin, Corporán said when they left the airport he and his mother were headed to Higuey on the Las Americas highway near the resort town Juan Dolio around 8:30pm, when four men in a green Mitsubichi Montero SUV pointed a gun at them and immediately three of them told him and a cousin to mount the thieves’ vehicle while a third remained with its mother in his.
Half an hour later, he says, the attackers who remained with his mother called the one who stayed with them and said his had become ill, because she had a pacemaker. “I felt powerless, I didn’t know what they had done with my mother, a sick lady, which led me to think that they were agent because they didn’t take the vehicle, they only took 200 dollars that she had.”
He said the attackers, who vehicle license plate was 0F00454, identified themselves as police, but were in plainclothes and didn’t request other documents, only the license.

Juan Dolio is not a safe place. Break-ins into homes and Apartments are daily occurrence with street robberies and shootings and killings. Thank the PLD and our glorious Queen.

Dominicans get what they deserve. They have no one else to blame except themselves for such a disastrous nation. My advice is for the people to think twice before voting anyone into office just because during their campaign they hand out rice, beer, and oil while taking photos of the poorest person they can find while handing them a toaster and smiling for the camera. PLD / PRD / PRSC - show me the difference....

when you cannot trust the police and the army chaos begins. It is sad a beautiful country has been covered in garbage, roads littered with debris and police and army that become hit men by night. Start a chain gang for the prisoners cleaning up the country and hanging corrupt cops and military on the street lamps next to the drug dealers. Take the money out of the pockets of the politicans and start restroying the country like Roosevelt did during the 1930's. Hire 100 thousand youths to start repairing the interstructure and give them a trade .

There are a lot of decent good people in the Dominican Republic.
This is a sad state of affairs.
Unfortunately they are trapped in a nightmare.
Politicians who are only there for the money.
Police that can't be trusted, forget about "protect and serve" the people.
Ladrones running ramped throughout the country, stealing everything they can.
Don't fool yourself into believing this is just a Dominican problem.
This chaos is happening worldwide.

I has nothing to do with Juan Dolio and has little to do with a corrupt government .The problem is that these thugs watch cars leaving the airport car park and they follow them ..not only in the direction of Higuey and San pedro but also on the way to the capital . I must know at least 20 people who have been pulled over or chased , including generoso who wrote here of his experience .
The police have said several times that there will be more police cars on las Americas at night but that has not been the case .
On two occasions that I know,of the thugs opened fire and later identified them selves as anti drug police but in an unmarked car .
For many years in Delhi and Calcutta , arriving passengers had to wait at the airport and then they made a convoy with police protection ,,for obvious reasons that would not work here so it is best to arrive in daylight .

this has been standard procedure in Jamaica since the 1990s. as i said before, most of these bad outcomes are just a little later in getting here. the criminal element learns the trade in the USA, and imports it here. if enough controls are not put in place, and soon, the DR will eventually become as dangerous as Jamaica. trust me on this one.

So, what are the authorities doing about it? And the chief of police? Is he investigating? Is anyone?
This type of horrific crime has been going on for 20 years or more!
Whenever I travel there, I make sure someone I know well, picks me up.
Always travel in daylight, never take a public taxi, and try to stay on main roads.
SDQ is worst, but it happens in POP and now, at STI. The police are almost certainly involved. If not directly, by proxy.
The chief needs to take a hard stand on this one. He must arrest those involved and prosecutors must call for the maximum penalty.
Enact the death penalty for those that commit armed robbery and kill women.
DR needs to take a tough stance on this one. It's up to us to demand justice, anyway we can!

Dread.
Unfortunately, it would seem to be that way.
It is all too clear what's going on in our nation, and those in power can never be prosecuted.
If the very people in charge of protecting the public, are the very ones who oppress and victimize us,
what are we to do? I wish we knew.

its really a sad state of affairs... I being born in the US from Dominican parents, travelling back and forth for business and pleasure. I have always wanted to retire in my moms home town of Salcedo.. I love it there!! The weather, beaches, rivers and waterfalls, people, calm lifestyle and the amazing women.. Sitting in front of the local colmado enjoying a real cold presidente.. You get the picture. I Love it in DR. Yet the horrors that have been ocuring in the past decade have totally made rethink my retirement location.. All that being said and in my very persnal opinion I truly believe that some drastic measures need to be taken by the good people.. They really need to do some very public killing on all these thieves in addition to increasing the prison time for theft, murder etc.. You steal,,,, 20 damn years!!!! You hurt innocent people,,, public execution..
I know, I KNOW.. Drastic, but these same scums are distroying the wondeful country... KILL THEM ALL!!!!!

my2cents,
you have enough confidence in the Dominican judiciary to trust them with capital punishment?
It won't be long before the only tourists coming here will be via direct flights to heavily-guarded all-inclusive resorts.
