Santo Domingo.- Sandy Faustino Benítez stabbed his wife Melina Ventura Batista, 29, several times and then fled the scene of the murder, but not before seriously injuring her sister Luisauris, 27.
The Police arrested him Sunday in the La Pared sector sector of Haina, for murdering “feminicide” victim no. 173 just this year. There were 210 in 2010.
More than 1,200 women have been murdered by their partners in the last five years, of which 80% never denounced cases of their prior mistreatment to authorities, according to official figures.
Violence against women, as with the general cases, has become “a monster which is devouring Dominican society,” for which various sectors have raised their concern.
Prosecutor for Woman Affairs Roxanna Reyes warned that cases of violence against woman have surpassed the authorities’ ability to deal with them.
She said more than 62,000 complaints of gender violence were received nationwide just in 2010. “We cannot go much further, we’re living it day to day, with cases which we didn’t see five years back.”

Dear lady,
You are supposed to follow up on those cases, go to the house of the reporter and kick the perpetrator out of the house and into prison! NOT JUST COUNT THEM! Oh, but that means taking responsibility...
Yes, it does, and that is what you are getting the money for, that miraculously is put into your bank-account every month.
If every official just does what he or she is paid to do, this country would be the best in the world!
It is people like Roxanna Reyes, who are content just counting numbers (and maybe adding a few just to impress mr. President), who get this country to go down the drain.
Get off your b.tt and do your job!

There is little respect for the apposite sex in this country the men get woman pregnant and run away from their responsibility and the women let them because there is no one in the legal area that wants to get involve.

If you fix the problem of violence against women, the Miss Reyes will be out of a job.

And? An official who is not doing her job, just counting the numbers, should be put out of the job!

Mandatory death sentence for "femenicide".... At the very least, cut their balls off.
DR must enact the death penalty for homicide and "crimes against the State" (corruption).
Strong laws with teeth, makes for a safe, orderly and secured society.....And a lot less idiotic Dominicans.

Therefore, she is going to keep counting and telling everyone how bad things have become and how much they need her to fix things, so she can keep her job. All she is going to do like most social institutions is simply control things a little bit to show improvement but not eliminate it completely. That would be employment suicide. Don't you get it? She needs the job....

guillermone,
I get it. Yes, that is the international problem of government officials. They forget two things:
1. They are working for, and being paid by the taxes of, the people.
2. They have to do the job, even if that means making themselves redundant (I am using difficult words to confuse her, not you).
Worldwide, government officials do all to keep their job and report 'progress' to the person in charge, be it the president of RD or of the US, or the queen of Holland. So they often have to lie in order to keep their job.
They forget, if they do their job well, and in this case solve the problem of femicidio, the people will want them to stay on and solve the next problem. Maybe child pregnancies, also a big thing in RD.

I have 4 sisters, may one of them rest in peace. So, I don't agree with any kind of violence against females and I don't agree with violence against males either.... NOW, women are not saints, none of us humans are saints. My concern is a major one: the issue of propaganda by women and the issue of "causality" of those deaths against women or violence against women. (At the same time we cannot ignored deaths against men by women). What the fawk are these women doing to make those men so angry? Please do not tell me that they women have done nothing wrong. What kinds of mind games do they play? What forms of "emotional abuse" do they apply against me? Something is triggering these men to act that way. What is it? If we cannot find the cause, we are not going to find the cure. It is not about men being abusive by nature or about some issue with drugs and alcohol. I've known of only one "honest woman" who admitted she had played games with her boyfriend, before he "set her on fire"!

The problem with society is role reversals. No one knows their proper place in society and therefore conflict and confusion provokes agression.

Just another of the many sadly overlooked issues in the DR. It's hard when there's so many other things taking the spotlight like daily corruption, drugs and murder for hire stories.

Bad Culture + Bad Education at home = to Bad Adults. The men have become aggressive and "players". At the same time most women have become "players" too, but that is not reason to hit them or kill them. I see men who at each step they take they have the need to grab their private parts, even old friends who I met as quiet little kids, One told me: "ah that is only so, we just do it for no apparent " when in reality it is that that has become a vicious instinct in them, and that so called "cool" behavior is just making a monster out of them. A time bomb of aggression.
