RICHMOND, Virginia. - The Dominican Siamese twins Maria Teresa and Teresa Maria were separated after a surgery lasting 24 hours, the Office of the First Lady announced Tuesday.

The operation began 5am Monday in Virginia Children's Hospital and concluded 5am today, when anxiety gripped those present in one of the hospital’s salons.

The first lady Margarita Cedeño accompanied the twins mother Lisania Sanatis and their aunt Mary for several hours to await the results.

The medical team of 20 physicians, led by doctor David A. Lanning, carried out the surgery to separate the girls organ by organ.

Lovely story and I hope they go well. Well done to the surgeons who kindly gave these little ones a chance at life and may you be rewarded by karma for your kindness. And the same to all others who helped.
God bless you all.

This procedure is quite risky, and if the twins share a lot of organs before separation, their chance of survival is very slim.

In the meantime hundreds of other Dominican children are suffering, and many will die, due to a desperate lack of facilities, doctors and nurses in our hospitals. Perhaps, like the house given to the uneducated, unmarried and underage mother, this operation is more about publicity than compassion. Why did the first lady need to accompany the mother to USA? When was the last time Margarita visited a Dominican pediatric unit?

Interesting that at the press conference, the mother thanked God a number of times, but never thanked the specialists, hospital or bio-medical science that actually made it possible. I wonder why God joined them in the first place, or was that Satin?

As a doctor currently working in podiatry in a Dominican public hospital, I know only too well, that this is the situation.
