Santo Domingo.- Baltimore Orioles hurler Alfredo Simón was acquitted Tuesday by a Puerto Plata (north) court in the January 1 shooting death of Michael Almonte Castillo, 25.

“The prosecutor didn’t prove the accusation. The prosecution witnesses said that they didn’t see Simón fire his weapon and the experts demonstrated that the projectile that was extracted from the deceased didn’t come from Simón’s weapon,” said defense lawyer Dinora Diloné.

Simón, 29, was accused of shooting and killing Castillo, 25, and of injuring his brother Starlin Castillo, 17, during a New Year’s Eve celebration in the town Luperon.

This has been a long time coming to an end ..I thought the agreement between the parties had been signed many many months ago when the family of the deceased were offered several millions of pesos and accepted and the agreement was notarised ,As a result the almost totally conclusive evidence against Alfredo has disappeared .
There have been several other articles placed here in DT raising the subjects of perjury and false witness ,,,which seem to be taken lightly in the DR ... That is why there is no proper justice here

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former NFL player David Meggett was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday after his conviction in a South Carolina court on charges of criminal sexual conduct and burglary, authorities said.

Meggett was convicted in a case involving an encounter with a college student at her house in North Charleston in January 2009, according to authorities.

Meggett, who attended high school in North Charleston, was a running back and punt returner in the National Football League between 1989 and 1998. The 1991 Super Bowl standout, who is free on $200,000 bail until Dec. 5, asked for leniency at his sentencing on federal money laundering and bank fraud charges. He said the criminal record he has racked up since his 1996 retirement is "not who I am."

. .A grand jury has indicted Plaxico Burress, the former Giants receiver, on weapons charges in connection with an episode last fall in which he accidentally shot himself in the leg in a Manhattan nightclub, the authorities announced Monday.

But the grand jury decided not to indict Antonio Pierce, a Giants linebacker who was with Mr. Burress in the nightclub and drove him to a hospital.

Mr. Burress, 31, was indicted on two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of second-degree reckless endangerment. If convicted on the weapons charge, he will have to serve at least three and a half years in prison.
