Santo Domingo.- Ex president Hipólito Mejía yesterday countered attacks on his campaign by providing copies to the media of a check for RD$500,000 allegedly written May 6, 2004, by the extraditable Oscar Ezequiel Rodriguez, to president Leonel Fernandez, but opened a new front lauding alleged virtues of Rafael Trujillo’s bloody dictatorship.
The check of the Popular Bank had been given to Fernandez as a contribution to that year’s campaign in which he beat Mejía, then seeking reelection.
Also handed out as an attached document was a copy of a card allegedly inviting the extraditable to a reception in the National Palace, for the handover ceremony to Fernandez.
On Tuesday Mejía pledged to disclose the check to the media, after newspaper Listin broke the case Monday, that the extraditable, wanted by the U.S. on drug charges, headed an organization which supports his candidacy.
Hails Trujillo
Mejía said despite the Trujillo dictatorship’s many evils “as everywhere,” there were also many good things, such as mandatory military service. “I was in the mandatory military service, and I wanted to be in the mandatory military service but my people convinced me that that was the of the Chief, I believe that there are many things of the Chief which are needed, I am not of those who have the pathology of freedom and that everything of the Chief is bad, I don’t believe that. There were bad things as everywhere, but there were many good things.”
Generals, admirals
The statements have roiled the country’s morning radio and TV talk shows, especially because Mejia’s statements came during a gathering of retired generals and admirals including Rafael Betances Nivar, José María Pérez Bello, Juan Bautista Rojas Tabar, Héctor Lizardo Jorge and Julio Ramos Troncoso, who handed him a plaque.

It never ceases to amaze me about the self protective behavior that is worked deeply into the fabric of the Dominican culture that when one has his faults pointed out to him he automatically goes into denial mode and deflects the barbs by targeting others. Hipolito is no stranger to this behavior. Aside from this, If he is not tripping over his baggy pants he is tripping over his tongue.
.....and this guy is presidential, the country deserves better !

And there are people in the DR who actually want this man to be President ?? Talk about out of the frying pan into the fire.

What people seem to forget is that when he was President, that's when the DR entered the spiral of deliquency that it's in. He had all these so called "friends" of very dubious reputation like Quirino and many others doing whatever they pleased. Under his rule he knew about the Baninter fraud before it even happened and he did nothing to prevent it. To this day those same "empresarios" that stole from the country are still free enjoying the spoils of there robbery. Under his watch acres of land from protected areas and national parks were illegally sold and there were many illegal landing strips, which he himself stated to the press were for drug drops. Now he shots himself once again (how typical of him) in the foot with these off the hinge remarks hailing Trujillo. He might as well have hailed Hitler.

This clown should be in a cage in a circus and he is running for president. Shame on us!
Hipoloco puts his foot in his mouth every time he opens it, during his tenure Dominicans lived daily the greatest uncertainty, as he was certifiably bipolar.
He always secretly admired Trujillo, and many times acted like he was his incarnate, once slapping his subordinates at the agriculture ministry, and ordering arbitrary imprisonment of radio news commentators.
While at the retired military association he assumed that all these out of sync recalcitrant soldiers, where fans of Trujillo, thus his praises of the regime, to generate applause from the old gizzards.
This bozo is disgusting and Dominicans should be ashamed of not only having elected him once, but much worse, probably reelecting him again. I am in denial weighing that possibility, which will probably cause civil unrest and accelerate the unification of our country to Haiti, since then we shall both be two failed states

@snoopyy3k, nothing more need be said. Thank you!!!! What the hell do voting Dominicans have in their heads? Sand? This guy actually has the opportunity to rape and pillage this country yet another time after his past proven plundering. Man or man ignorance really must be bliss.

Hipolito still hasn't learned that in politics the truth can be dengerous!!
The country is in serious problems but these fools prefer to worry about Trujillo who many of them say they despise though many of these same politicians benefited directly or indirectly from the dictatorship!

@airgordo- Your comment solidifies my belief that ignorance is bliss!! Offer poor education opportunities to your young and they will stay uneducated and ignorant for life. A great plan for any Dominican politician.

DR typical polititians DON"T WANT education, because when people are Ignorant they can be easily manipulated, that is WHY the PLD party and Leonel Fernandez REFUSE to comply with the LAW that grants 4% of the GDP for education...that is the system on place used for all DR Presidents to be "the man"
From: Dominican Republic
@airgordo- I am convinced no matter who is in office here, at least with the current choices, education will always be ignored. You are right that the uneducated are easy to manipulate. It goes without saying that the illiterate are even easier to manipulate and the literacy rate here is dismal. When cars and trucks with loud speakers spewing political messages need to pass by would be voters, it is just another sign of the manipulation put into practice. If these people could read maybe they could see for themselves just who these candidates are. well, maybe.
