Santo Domingo.- The Supreme Court will hear the case against a judge accused of extorting 6,000 dollars from a foreign company in the country’s East region, Chief justice Jorge Subero announced Wednesday.

The Chieft Justice later identified the judge as Altagracia Sanchez Molina, of the La Romana Civil and Commercial Chamber.

The plaintiff’s lawyer turned over recordings, documents and another evidences to Subero which allegedly implicates the judge, whose name, region, or court weren’t disclosed.

"The denunciations are very concrete, with precise details," Subero told the press, calling the case “very serious.”

He said recorded phone conversations refer to money which wasn’t delivered and "consequently an adverse ruling took place," against the company, reportedly the same one of English capital which UK ambassador Steven Fisher recently denounced as being blackmailed by judicial officials.

Both cases will be treated this morning by the Council. Nevertheless, Subero Isa did not want to speculate if a relation between both denunciations exists. It added that the complaint against the judge and who he himself listened to the recordings that tie the defendant.

In other news:

President says crime is down

Speaking in Santiago yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez said that the incidence of violence and crime has been notably reduced in the province over the last four months. Fernandez said that the city of Santiago feels safer today, thanks to the efforts of the state law enforcement agencies.

If only saying it made it so.

This guy hasn't told the truth in 7 years. How could anyone believe him, ever?

If the allegations are true, then this corrupt judge should become the Poster boy for a national campaign against corruption in the judicial branch of government.

But something tells me that a mere 6 thousand dollar bribe might not be the real amount and story. 6 thousand is very small change for a multimillion dollar investment. There's more to this.

Our government is corrupt from top to bottom nothing will be done about it. Companies not interesting in paying the bribes should take their business someplace else. Hurt them where it counts when nobody will conduct business here eventually the people will see they cannot get the goods and services they want and need and will be forced to do something about it.

More than just take their business someplace else they need to do what this business clearly did and recorded evidence of the bribery and are now making it public. This way not only is the loss of business to the country visible but the extortionist as well. If this was done every time the public would see clearly who is behind the corruption as well as the damage it does to investment in the country, loss of projects and the jobs that go with it.

Just walking away keeps everything hidden. No one knows why an investment didn't happen or who wanted money to grease the wheels and was to blame. Lets see what happens to this judge and hope it may be the beginning of a lesson to be learned that might just put the next judge off doing the same thing.

Encouraging and promoting to take business somewhere else will never solve the corruption problem, but throwing the judge in the slammer and throwing away the key will certainly be helpful.

Wow this story was posted at "Local - 14 December 2011, 1:12 PM"

It is now 10 o’clock, Lie-onel do you where your child Little Ricky the Master spinner is to attack ambassador Fisher?

Unfortunately the “Supreme Corrupt Court” will do nothing.

This is the same court that refused to look into the illegal $130.000.000 million dollars Sunland loan Lie-onel Fernandez and his bag man Felix Bautista made disappear like Jimmy Hoffa.

Then later on when Chief Justice Jorge Subero only after he was chastised by the American Embassy, according to a Wikileaks revelation, did he say it was a "mistake" not to have heard the case.

So if he didn’t give an excrement about $130,000,000 dollars do you think he is going to sweat his G-string over $6,000 bucks?

I don’t think so!

It appears not to be a good news day for the Narco- PLD plague of corruption.

The Canary begins to sign:

"Extraditable confirms he contributed to Leonel Fernandez campaign in 2004 "

Oscar Ezequiel Rodríguez Cruz

"He pointed out that the check he issued as contribution to the campaign, dated May 6, 2004, could only be redeemed by Fernandez.

He also stated having links with the former Minister of Education, Melano Paredes, as well as to by the name of Hector Reyna who is very close to President Fernandez.

He indicated that Paredes and Reyna always visited his office and now they act like they don’t know him."

It seems no one in Santiago believes Lie-onel's lies except xwill7 and Atabey:

"Population of Santiago rejects President Fernandez's report of on crime reduction"

"SANTIAGO, Dominican Republic.-A total rejection has been generated to the report presented by President Leonel Fernández, which states that a reduction in crime has occurred after they adopted the Government ‘s anticrime measures in the province of Santiago.

There reason for this probe is becuase a high profile corporation made a complaint about "Dominican Justice". It would not suprise if someone from a higher court lost money from an investment in the UK company. Anyone else would be ignored.
I believe the corruption in the DR courts is too great to be resolved by this probe. There are too many judges in this country that have assests that far exceed their income.

As usual, the same group of whiners trying to change the world overnight. Mr Fisher tell your countrymen they were getting a deal when they were just asked for 6k, that must have been some sort of Black Friday special, everybody knows "including you" that's how it's been done in Latin America for centuries now, so stop playing dumb and tell your rookie investor that's always part of the "miscelaneous expenses" on any investment done in this region, after all nothing will change and if anything that judge will be out in a few months if ever convicted.

We all know Mr Fisher you will probably try to stay out of this after getting slapped in the wrist by a group of lords from parliament who then headed to Boca Chica which was really the main reason for their visit. Long live her majesty.

tomito, spoken like a true inbred entitlement mentality Dominican. What do you consider "overnight"? Geological time?

Extortion as a norm.

Then you'd have to agree that the British government should be able to enslave your whole country as a form of extortion. All Dominicans in foreign countries would have to return to be processed.

Hey Miller,

I see you are back with your anti-Dominican crap. I love the way you always personalyze your attacks against Dominicans. You must therefore be a racist-giggot, confirmed over-and-over again. What an Intelect!!! You never cease to impress me and other DT readers/blogers!

Tomito simply expressed his disapointment and personal conclussion that actions and outcomes for corruption are and will be today the way the were yesterday. a.k.a. His lack of confidence in a broken system. For you to generalize is racist!

Come on, tell us how you realy feel!

You should read before you yap at someone!

It is not that easy. Unfortunately, most developed countries have laws that prohibit paying brides in order to secure business. The US has the foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The UK has a similar Bribery Act. I sure Mr Fisher would not want to explain the $6,000 expense on the company books to an auditor.

When a country has a reputation for this type of corruption, foreign companies see the DR as very high risk for investment. When there is foreign investment it helps stabilize the national currency. If the government reduces this corruption it will help DR government with the IMF Standby Agreement.

I hope that someday the DR will overcome these problems. and I hope that day will be soon.

@gmiller

Come back when you have something meaningful to say. The DR is a very young democracy, only decades old, since 1961. Again these changes take time, just a few decades ago, in a country called the USA, blacks and women could not even vote among other things but I guess that may be"geological time to you".
