SANTO DOMINGO.- The Consumer Protection Institute (Pro Consumidor) denounced Friday that that Maria Trinidad Sanchez province (northeast) governor Ricardo Pichardo prevented the confiscation of expired products in a supermarket in the city of Nagua on Thursday.

It said the official prevented the confiscation of more than 2,000 products with expired dates in the Supermarket Amparito in Progreso Street, owned by Jose A. Duarte, and which are being sold despite their high health risks.

In a statement, Pro Consumidor said its inspectors, analysts and pollsters supervised by Georgina Alvarez affirmed that the governor sent a military contingent to prevent them from seizing thoe products.

It also affirmed that Pichardo’s actions sought to intimidate Pro Consumidor personnel, and that the governor warned them against carrying out the confiscations because it jeopardizes him politically.

Inbred entitlement,

I say you can sell the rotten food, that's the law today.

Nagua: entra si quieres, sal si puedes.

Unfortunately the story dosen't tell us what has expired meats or canned and dry goods.

Meats I definetly understand and support.

However if it was dry and canned goods then they have overstepped their boundaries. Any intelligent person will tell you that the expiry date is only a best before date. It under no circumstances is an indication of tainting. Sometimes these yahoos in power don't know them selves what they are doing and what the numbers stand for.

now i guess that `people like Atabey will understand why this country will NEVER be a faint shadow of an Asian Tiger. here is the governor of a province, enforcing the sale of possibly tainted goods, for his own political security. not only that, but, with the governmental military apparatus. this is like some horrific story that some malcontent conjured up in his imagination. unfortunately, it is apparently true.

This simply shows that the country is a dumping grounds for expired food and medicine. Many times I have purchase medicine from the pharmacies with a date code that has been removed. A persons profit is more important that the peoples health.

Another unlawful use of military personnel.....

Where is the justice? When was the constitution Amended to allow use of the military for personal gain?
If the military contingent had any MILITARY education, he would have realized that this was wrong.

"Contingent : A group of people united by some common feature, forming part of a larger group."

This governor and his military contingent need to be investigated

One would have to think governor Ricardo Pichardo has something to lose if they throw out the expired products.

I once bought some baby food from a colmado and my wife (Dominicana )noticed it had passed it's expiration date. Man did she raise a fuss and the baby food was replaced.

Ask yourself this :

Would you want your babies/family members eating potentially dangerous food ?

Perhaps, these items were donated, slated to be given out to the needy and this crook put it up for sale in his buddies supermarket instead...

It sounds like the Phytosanitary Certificates were back dated incorrectly and so now there is a problem ... a solution would be to leave the date field blank and then only use a pencil to enter the date, lightly pressed in case an additional minor adjustment is required for the date ...

I think ForrestHill has this thing pegged. I have seen water bottles with expiration dates on them -- On the other hand I have some new packages of Cafe Santo Domingo en Grano and that shows it is ‘consumir preferible’ good until Nov. 2013 which is quite a stretch for a non vacuum packed item. I don't think it would be trash in December of 2013 nor do I think it would be very good December of 2012. Put it on a shelf in the sunshine or have it in a shaded, cool back room - those dates are only for guidance - but congratulations on reading at all. I think the governor made the right call but a shame that it takes troops to get someone to use common sense. A lot of petty officials try to shake down people in general. Make the markets red tag expired ‘preferable use by’ to highlight its ‘past prime’ (like a lot of us) but still useable with caution.

Earth to Dready, corruption in outdated goods is not restricted to DR. Even in the good old USA, we have many instances of products being sold in this fashion. and I agree with you that many products are re-labeled to ship to foreign markets. This is a very old scheme. As is the one where "B" quality cameras and electronics are sold as "NEW"

Large Box Store use end of date sales to drop prices on many items. And in many cases, these goods are still perfectly good to eat.

This clown of a politician should have his ass taken to court. Where's the pro-consumer protection agency to file notice with court?

But as with many things regarding DR, you Dready fail to take into account that change IS POSSIBLE and that DR is not a static unchanging environment. Perhaps all that stagnation in Jamaica has morphed you into such a person, but we Dominicans have known far worse situations in our nations past to be convinced with your perpetual negativity with regards to DR's future.

Look at diffrence when there is justice system that works:

Ex-Mayor Edgar Santana is sentenced to 18 years in prison for soliciting bribes from contractors

This guys gets 18 years for something that in DR is badge of honor as Mr. Miller would say!
