Santiago de los Caballeros.- Relatives of several patients at the José María Cabral y Báez regional hospital are claiming that a fake doctor performed several operations and swindled them out of sums ranging between ten and twenty thousand pesos. Relatives of five patients have made complaints at the hospital, claiming that the doctor, identified only as Alcántara, had charged sums of money for operations without going through with the procedures.

The hospital authorities are investigating the circumstances under which the supposed professional was working.

Some of those affected were left in a poor state of health after the surgery, including the case of Oscar Quiroz, as denounced by his brother Elvin Quiroz, who said that he had to pay the supposed doctor RD$20,000.

Most of the patients affected by the supposed doctor are from poor families from the communities of Mao, Santiago Rodríguez and Matanza, in Santiago.

What surgical procedure costs only $500?
Yep, he can't be a real surgeon.
Maybe these patients should be glad they didn't come under his scalpel.

Perhaps this guy should go over to the Phytosanitary Certificate department, ask for a job and then head out and inspect banannas or something ... his whole purpose in this would be to report back whether the item is a fruit or vegetable and would he eat it (is sugar cane a fruit or a vegetable?) ... perfect job for a fake doctor who could then manage the fake phyto process ...

Roy, most surgeries in dr cost much less than that in any public hospital. And they are done by the same docs that would do them on the private clinics for a lot more $$$€€€

He was probably not fake, maybe a crooked general surgeon that did other procedures he was not certified in. There's a plastic surgeon in Santiago who said he trained in France and all he did was an observership for 4 months, not touching any patients. He's roaming around killing people. And some of his patients even do well! God loves dr!

I have been told by a doctor (genuine one) that in some big public hospitals, anyone wearing a lab-coat and a stethoscope can walk in unnoticed and start treating patients. Many outpatient procedures are free, but some things (like X-rays) must be paid for. This is done at the cashier. However any patient that does not know the procedure, can be duped into paying direct to the "doctor".

Sometimes it is better to be treated by a quack. For example genuine, expensive radium treatment in the 1930s actually caused cancer. However the quacks only used "pretend" radium.

Ohh and before I am accused again of being a "Dominican hater" let me add that I have had treatment in a very busy, chaotic public hospital in San Cristobal. The treatment was very prompt, effective and from my layman-gringo's perspective, professional and world-class.

they wshould be happy he did not go though with the operation.
dominicans love to play doctor, in new york the police catch lots of them {the fake doctors]
the whole country is fake, nothing is for real in the dr.
one needs a brain to study meds, humans have a brain 3 times larger then an ape or monkey, guess dominicans are not even human then,
how dont try and tell me their brain if they have any is not as small as an apes?.

If you are an uneducated patient, not feeling the best, why wouldn't you pay a convincing guy in a white lab-coat to get better? Gullible peasants pay squillions to Evangelist Churches for "miracle" cures and no-one bats an eyelid. Lock those crooks up too!
