May they Rest In Peace.
Pending the results of a formal investigation, one can expect the root causes of the tragedy will be excess speed, DUI, faulty equipment, and operating in a dangerous and reckless manner.

5??? How fast where they going? This needs more details.
From: Dominican Republic
Of course , my condolences to all involved, but that being said, it is a sheer wonder that this does not occur more often. If my drive back here from La Romana yesterday eve is any indication (and it is), the continued belief that Dominican drivers can at anytime pass with oncoming traffic, regardless of road, corner, speed or lighting....this is bound to become more common.
Meanwhile, AMET and G2 only wish to extort at makeshift roadblocks.

PuntaCanaMike,
Sadly, it does happen often here. The Dominican Republic has one of the highest road tolls in the world.

The 2 lane roads with no concrete divider in the middle are the ones that get hairy fast!

Don't spill presidente in your car interior...

i am trying to get a mental pìcture of the reason for the impatience of Dominicans on the roads. put them behind the wheel of a car, and everything becomes a matter of urgency. if they are going 100 yards, the journey begins with a jackrabbit start, tires squealing. when they arrive at the destination, the procrastinations, hesitations, and just general leisureliness, returns. maybe they have to get there before you do, because you might beat them to whatever they think is waiting at the other end. i have no idea....

I only hope this serves as an reminder for all to drive careful espicially with the Holidays are around the corner......but then again this the DR.
3 weeks ago while driving from Boca Chica to Bani on biz I myself almost got into 4 accidents 2 of which could of been fatal, never have I once seen the police stop a car for speeding, running a red light or stop sign, unsafe vehicle or a unsafe lane change.
When driving in the DR ones life is at the mercy of other drivers, is it any wonder ?

Regarding the tour buses and other drivers on the roads I play more like DODGE BALL, in the DR there's no respect for the rules of the road.

To anyone that drives in the DR it is very clear how this happens. How often have you come around a corner only to meet a Dominican coming right down the center of the road? For me, many.

Road rules? What road rules? The only one I know is mosquitobikes have right-of-way, even if it's the wrong way.
From: Dominican Republic, vieja Santo Domingo
I do not know what to think ...I simply dread that stretch of road between la Romana and Punta Cana or Bavaro ,, Sometimes the bus driver is chatting on his cell phone while driving at more than 100 km per hour or chatting to someone next to him or simply trying to bull dose his way through traffic because he has a bigger vehicle or just gaining 15 yards by passing a car and ducking in immediately in front . Or sometimes it is a car driver simply not driving con prudencia ...You really have to drive very defensively here in the DR and the difference in arrival time is often neglible.
Today I was in San Pedro , which shares with Higuey the distinction of having the most crazy motor cyclists and I saw a bus scatter at lesat 6 motor bikes to the side with I think three falling off ...
The other disaster area , as Mike would know is crossing Rio Chavon ,,I dread that every time .

Jersey...there does not have to be more to it. Plain and simple....some of the most inept driving I have seen in my life and for the most part....for nothing!
AMET update....working hard at the FRIUSA CORNER...LOOKING FOR STICKERS. Whether or not you have a sticker in the window means nothing about enforcement of laws. Oddly enough, 4 months ago everyone was wearing a helmet for fear of a fine. Now....because it is sticker month...they drive right past without concern from our boys and girls (that is what they are) in drab green.
Ricky....you are correct...nothing better than total lack of discipline as the road narrows to 1.5 lanes as the bridge crosses the Chavon.

every so often, some government hack gets a container load of helmets cheap from China. he wants a quick score, so he gets his buddies in the bureaucracy to put some heat on guys with no helmets. as soon as they are all sold out, it is business as usual. you see, the government losers are not concerned about whether or not you use the helmet. they just want you to buy one.

Derady, I thought the helmets draped over the front of the handle-bars was to conceal the fact they have no headlight. Silly me!
Hopefully the government hack will bring in a container load of mosquitobike headlights next time, and force riders to halve them installed at his bubby's chain of installers.
