CONTUI, Dominican Republic.- Hundreds of farmers of the community El Yagal, who were evicted from their lands to make way for the Barrick Gold mine, Tuesday blocked the streets with trunks, torched tires, debris and stones, to demand that the government relocate tem and reassess their properties.

They demand fair payment for their lands by the authorities, and affirm that many were forced to sell and that the government bought each 630 square portion for RD$8,600, but resold to Barrick for US$28,000, which they say is unfair.

Also they denounced that since the start of evictions in 2008, more than 600 families have to receive one cent.

Farmers’ spokesman Manuel Lantigua, quoted by news source hoy.com.do, said a large number of the people affected are senior citizens and have only their land to live on. “They were forced to leave, because the government had declared the lands eminent domain, because it had sale commitments with Barrick. This fight goes on permanently until we’re located in the lands pledged in the New Yagal and the fair price the land’s worth is paid to us.”

He said people have refused the money offered because they consider that the government “wants to pay a pittance compared with the amount Barrick is paying.”

Hey DT:

The government is now in default and the IMF has walked away. Isn't this worthy of mention?

In case you missed it:

Typical leonel governance. Just think of how many other families have been blindsided by the same tactic conducted by our faithful government with the other 449 mining projects in DR.

A least Leonel does not burned down 200 Tons of rice like the Hipo did in Nagua when he was president nor make the country lose 25% of the national grouth in the past 50 years which Hipolito did also. Some got paid and some haven't got pay.

Blatant government corruption in the face of a national windfall of new found revenue from the mining of gold and other valuable resources ... wow ...

The government of Canada expropriated 40 acres of my farm to extend a four lane freeway ... they gave me $5000.00 levelled my log cabin and not another word. It took me five years to build the cabin out of cedar, steel roofing etc, easily should have been paid $25,000 for the cabin alone not to mention the 40 acres ... so in this situation even Canada is no better than DR ... yes I use the highway now but no cabin to enjoy and my childhood retreat now gone ...

To all those who are still not compensated ... NO SLACK! Fight for your rights!
