Sister denies arresst

NEW YORK.- Bachata bandleader Edward Jose (Varon de la Bachata) was arrested at Kennedy Airport noon Tuesday, as he was about to fly to Dominican Republic with his entire group, of which some were also reportedly detained.

The performer had just concluded a tour of several weeks in New York and other states, and was boarding a flight to Santo Domingo, when Custom and Border Protection (CBP) agents arrested him, confirmed a source close the investigation, quoted by newspaper Nuevo Diario.

The source added that the bandleader faces questioning into the large number of dollars he was allegedly taking to his country, though the amount wasn’t specified. Federal law places a limit for travelers of $9,999 dollars, without having to declare.

Sister denies arrest

A sister of the performer, who declined giving her name to news source CDN, denied Wednesday that her brother is being held.

Something's wrong here with the story. You aren't asked how much money you have Leaving. It's declared entering a country. Maybe the sister is right, maybe they were just questioned and released. Let's wait and see if there's a follow up.

Those who are famous or rich in DR always believe they are above the laws and can do things without respecting the laws.....they are the products of ignorant

No Slick, Customs agents will randomly pull you out the line, have you empty your pockets when leaving the U.S. and ask how much money you are taking to DR, where and how long you will be staying and the purpose of the trip - while you are still in the US. Money laundering is a byproduct of the underworld.

Artists are often used for money laundering.

Hard to determine how much tickets were sold during a whole tour.

I remember Shakira's first album in English was called "laundry service".

Wink or coincidence? From a Colombian national!

i think what happened here is he was avoiding the IRS, most of those bachata guys are paid in cash, so figure a tour would bring him at least somewhere above 40K minimum, so he was supposed to pay uncle sam at least i believe 20 to 30 percent of that, thats my hunch. i also believe that since dominicans are a corrupt group of people, since the bar owners etc where he sang most def hide some of their profits from the irs they therefore pay him in cash.

28% until u file your return.
if u go to las vegas and have a social security card and other id. if your lucky enough to hit a jackpot other there they will pay u the whole pot if u have a s/s card with u. if not they take out 28% for their uncle sam..
not many pay any taxes in the dr as u aready know. nao many pay any thing if they dont have to {excuse is the guys in the government are corrupt and will steal the moeny any way} they might be right for the dr but in other countries u need to pay. {he comes to the states makes a pocket full of money and wants to bring it all back with him to the dr? thats bullshit and many do this from the dr.

respecting the laws

their are laws in the dr but the police dont enforce them and the citizens dont give a f...... about rules and laws.
just watch the way they drive their cars and try hard to run down the poor souls that want to cross the street and this is the least of the problems.
its every man for himself in this wild-west island where most dont have any education at all and most dont want one.

It is not illegal to take more than $9,999 out of the USA as long as it is reported when asked, or upon arriving at the destination country stated in the customs forms. If a traveler is pull at random by an ICE agent and questioned regarding the amount of cash or other financial instruments in his person or baggage he needs to be candid about it and explain where the money came from .

A non US citizen does not have to paid taxes on money received while performing in the United States

hmmmmm every yr thousands of musicans tour the USA, some make even 20k others even over 100k dollars per night, i highly doubt the IRS looks the other way on those earnings.

Sounds like he forgot to pay his taxes and figured since laws dont apply in the DR its the same everywhere else. Until he hands over his taxes and declares the rest hes not leaving. He will probably get all angry and get himself arrested and thrown in jail as well.

really? they pull you out of the line, at random, and, if you have more than 10 large, which has not been declared, you are in a world of hurt.

Pre boarding Xray equipment can detect cash. Random pulling out of line not necessary.

This is not Juan Luis Guerre or Lady Gaga-

he's not making big bucks playing bachatta gigs in the North East.
