NEW YORK. - Several Dominican members of the gang “Screw Street 137” were arrested on drug trafficking, weapons, attempted murder, extortion and other charges, and for having terrified a large part of Harlem, Manhattan,.

Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance and the Police, Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced the bust of the gang yesterday, with a sweep coordinated by several law enforcement agencies.

Jonathan Hernandez, 19, faces one charge of attempted murder for using a pistol to fire at a crowd 10 times on 137 St and Lenox Avenue.

The Office of the DA said the gang members will be tried as adults, for their violent acts and for having terrified the residents.

Vance said since 2008the police were after the gang’s top leaders, who are also accused of selling large amounts of crack, of using “mules” for their business and extorted rival gangs.

Vance said the ringleaders founded the gangs known as “2 Mafia Family” and “Goons on the Deck”, that later fused and named “Screw Street 137.” “The arrested gang members paid even children to transport drugs and guns, for which they were not just a threat to public safety, but also to the stability of the families.”

The police taped more than 1,000 telephone conversations between the gang members in the streets and others in Rikers Island prison.

Also arrested were Jacqueline Layne, 20, Jeffrey Brown, 19 and Tyrone Gibbs, who were arraigned by judge Edward McLaughlin.

I would not waste tax payers dollars to put them in Jail here in the U.S. They think they are big & bad deport them to the Dominican Republic & put them in Jail there. Trust me they will regret ever doing what they did in the U.S. & taking the oppourtunity this country gave them for granted. You know they are probably those type of Dominicans that can't even speak Spanish & speak it all messed up.

I think those two "fine gentlemen" pictured above are Brown and Gibbs.

Nevertheless, the lack of serious educational foundation and family structural commitment to the same leads too many of our youth into this dead end racket. A friend of mine once told me that a study on the inner-city drug trade produced arguments to support that at best a minimum wage rate is all these people end up making from the trade. The higher ups make a killing and the middle men too. Of course, the "Bling Bling" culture is too strong an attraction for these misguided youth. With poor academic prospects due primarily from poor family structures and lack of serious academic commitment on the part of adults and children, this problem will continue to fester. Sad, but unless the issue is solved at the family level, small chance this will be solved.

Now Dominicans will see how it feels like when people talk bad about a particular race. Because I'm Puertorican and they still talk bad about us. Thats why lets stick together PR's & DR's because we are not all bad people.

Welcome back to the sweet home of Dominican Republic after the service of jail time.

In the hometown, you will find much better life styles than in the USA because your GOD FATHER, Mr. Lieonel , will tolerate your criminal activities and you may be out of jail if you know how much money you have to pay, easy enough and simple enough.

The small street gang that goes by the name of “Screw Street 137” is made up of individuals from many different ethnic backgrounds. Why is Dominicantoday exclusively referring to the gang only as Dominican?

Don't they look like choir boys?

Some of us have worked so hard and with great integrity to achieve great things, move our culture up the ladder. However, it all seems so futile, since there are just so many who are let into the country who seem bent on holding us down or even moving us backwards. Immigration needs to get more selective on admission criteria to this country.

@Atabey, with great respect for your contributions, past and present, I would beg that you not make excuses for these individual's actions. I see people from all walks of life working very hard and with great integrity to earn a decent living, improve their educational level to achieve class mobility. That opportunity was amply available to these miscreants; they just chose otherwise. No excuses. Period.

What I do not get, why should they be be tried as adults when they are minors.
Would they run the same luck, if they would have been Italian, Irish or Jew.

Glomarexplorer,

I don't think I'm making an argument for acceptance; very much the contrary. I'm saying that this problem is a manifestation of poor family grounding and closely linked to the poor academic achievement countless witnesses can attest to in regards to young Dominicans in NYC. In fact, there is an article from Yesterday's DT on the sad state of Dominicans students in JFK HS in the Bronx. Many Dominicans have disregarded the street culture and instead held steadfast to non-criminal options. For instance, The NYC Police Force has witnessed a large Dominican contribution. And other public and private sectors continue to receive Dominican youth employees. Unfortunately, there exist a problem with too many of our youth not adequately achieving academic validity. And still stems in my opinion on the lack of family grounding, and overall seriousness in regards to academic rigor. I have several close friends in the schools and this is what they describe to me.

its all about education or the lack of it.
in caracas 1,500 protesters decry raging violence. {sept of 2010}
last week in puerto rico 1,000 of students took to the streets to protest a special $800 annual tuition fee imposed on them the students to help reduce a hugh government deficit. this fee-equal to more than 50%of annual tuition. these students where inspired by the youth revolts in tunisia and egypt.
in london few months back 350,000 students also took to the streets to demand that the government does not impose higher tuition fees on them.
all of thes young want and need a good education and are taking to the streets to fight like hell for their chance for a good education
they know their lives and future depend on this education, but in the dr no one stands up for their right for their children for a good education. why?

Thats why education is important from very early on, because even the Governments seem to be after 'get rich quick' schemes. Gangs are appealing to the youth because they offer a certain sense of 'family' that is reality is just an illusion. Its sad to see so many young one 18, 19, 20 throwing their entire lives away over some stupidity. Just with a little direction and discipline these same young ones could do a lot of positive and constructive things.

SHAMEFUL THE ILLITERACY RATE.
last week one fellow said that what leo is doing going to other countries like russia, and others is laying the ground work for like in 10-20 years it will profit the dr.
i do not know if its going to profit the dr. or not, but i do know that putting money into education for the young is a better and more sure bet the dr will prosper from this education. when one has a educationj it stays with him for his whole life, education for the young if u look at history proves what iam saying, just look at costa rica, panama, uruguay, and at top of the list please look at finland. pleasae look at finland.
THE ONLY WAY TO GO GET THE EDUCATION , EVEN IF TAKES DRAMATIC PROTESTS IN THE DR.

Cejota, Exactly !!!

All you people are stupid. Making selling drugs illegal is like making the sale alcohol illegal. It is stupid.

Other than overt violence, these young men have done next to nothing wrong. The real injustice is a society than continues the farce of making something as popular and harmless as cocaine illegal.

Tobacco kills far many more and lets not even talk about alcohol.

How many coca plantations do these guys own ??? How many planes and submarines to transport the drug do they own ????? How many contacts do they have with the US military, customs, DEA and CIA in order to get the drugs in do they have ?????

These are the small fry. And in typical American fashion they are the "dark" ones who live in the hood and will now be tossed in jail at taxpayer expense for the next two decades at least.

You people make me sick. How stupid can you be. Wake up !!
