SANTIAGO. - At least 300 undocumented Haitians were forced out since dawn Monday from the barrios San José and La Mina in Dominican Republic's second biggest city, as the deadline issued by the two communities for the foreigners to leave expired today.
The inhabitants had repeatedly denounced that many Haitians who live there don’t work and commit crimes.
The Immigration Agency detained and later repatriated 150 undocumented Haitians from those barrios last night.
San José and La Mina Neighborhood Board president Francisco Consuegra said they delivered a letter to the authorities requesting the regulation of the cramp quarters rented to the Haitians in the city. “Many Haitians who live in the quarters sub-let their rooms to other compatriots who are criminals and we aren’t going to allow it.”
The Immigration Agency had warned the barrio dwellers against trying to drive out the undocumented Haitians, but the residents affirm that many of the foreigners even do their physical needs in the yards of schools, houses, businesses and other places, which may lead to the spread of cholera.
An Immigration officials quoted anonymously by diariolibre.com said they get so many complaints daily from citizens from communities on alleged criminal activities by many Haitians, that they cannot respond to all of them.
They said most of their work centers on keeping the Haitians from crossing the border to then remain in Dominican territory illegally.

I want the Haitians to have a good and productive home to go home to but I do not believe that this is going to happen without certain changes that I have outlined here in this forum. I honestly believe that we need the help of our Dominican brothers. We need a political hand that will work with us to secure the aid promised by the world powers. We also need a President that will do for Haiti before himself/herself.
We believe in hard work but we need a solid platform from which to work from. Haiti will never have this platform unless it embraces all of its members, is transparent, and is inclusive at all levels.

Dominicans have helped Haitians for decades by allowing millions to work and have a better life in DR even while most have been doing it illegally yet instead of using that help to build-up Haiti so their family won't have to go across the river, most have decided to just cross the river and forget about Haiti all-together. Haitians forgot that the solution to Haiti is NOT to be found on the other side of the fence but in their own side.
Sorry to tell but Dominicans have done more than enough of what we were capable of and is now dragging us down so we have to solve our problems on our side regardless of whether some others around like it or not.
This solution by these Barrios is no the ideal but it works so be it.

The HAitians have destroyed Haiti and now they are going to destroy DR. That's all it is. They don't see it that way, they can't. These Haitians are the bottom of the barrel, uneducated, fierce, rebelious and wild. Yes I said it. Try dealing with these folks and they are like wild, wild men!!! They fight and argue like little boys on the streets and then they steal, poop and piss everywhere. I'm sick of it. Honestly I don't care if you are black. I'M BLACK!!!!!!!!!!!! I love being black. But I don't like the mentality. If it was 100,000 Nigerians I wouldn't give a crap, they got more education and sense then these Haitianos. Hardheaded people.
They will adapt, I've seen it before in Miami. I've watched with pride the HAitians develop and progress. But it was hard, so hard. A lotta convulsion a lotta pain. DR don't need this, we don't want this. Go back to your country.

What this situation is slowly developing towards is a Historical Moment. A moment that will change and possibly instigate a severe National Crisis. Perhaps even force the removal of the President if not worse. This massive wave of poor indigent Haitian masses flowing eastward and setting up camp around and inside towns and cities will not end shortly unless strong and consistent measures are implemented and Maintained. Many people think LF is a compromised figure, having sold the national interests, identity, for a few gold coins and the accolades of the international media, NGO, etc. Problem is that in order to have national validity, these changes must meet with the people's approval. And if put to a vote it is highly unlikely that DR's people will willing vote in favor of some loose "union" with a nation and state so devoid of stability and progress. Tough, but the honest truth.

I joined this forum to come up with ideas where we all benefit and where we all get what we want in the end. You all know my position and we all know what is really plausible as solutions to our common problems. We are the group that represents some the most intelligent voices of our countries but we need more than comments, we need a commitment to follow a real agenda - one that makes sense.
I think that we should call on both our governments to be more accountable for what is happening to both of our communities and demand that they outline real solutions. They must sit down and tackle this problem. They should form an 'action committee' to bring solutions to the table.
I honestly believe that most of the solutions to these problems relative to illegal immigration in the DR will force the Haitian authorities to take a real hard look at the roots of these problems - Haitian Root Problems.

The problem with the situation is that for Haiti the status quo just means the same situation but for us it can me our disappearance as a nation .Both are governments are inept but ours manages to get some things though with more "needy" people flooding across the border sooner or later we are looking at a social explosion which nobody needs.
Unfortunately in a fantasy world we could help DR and help Haiti but in the real world what is beneficial for DR (deportations and strict border controls) may just push Haiti over the edge and what gives Haiti a pressure valve may just explode and destroy DR.
I have no problems helping others and especially a neighbor but when helping that neighbor may hurt my people, then I have to put my interests first so we can push for help for Haiti and help Haitians as much as we can but on their side of the Artibonito not ours.

I hope that God will give us the right solutions that will benefit us all - especially the poor and the disenfranchised. I hope that God will calm the temperament of those who seek violence or hunger for it.
When I was a kid, before the Vietnam War, before Michael Jackson, before Martin Luther King was assassinated, we played with all the kids and it did not matter where you were from. There was no hatred in us for each other, there was no wanting of violence in us for each other, and there was no need to stop playing just because the dark skinned or the light skinned were around. I leave you tonight with a message of hope - perhaps we can be more like children in this respect and move beyond the playground and into the common working ground and work these problems out peacefully.

SEND THEM BACK before they do to our country what they have done to Haiti. If the illegals were living in the areas where the wealthy live or the politicos they would have been gone. I live in Santiago. I see what is going on. Very few of the remarks come from Santiagueras. I know the barrios. I feel the problem. I speak and write from experience. Very sad that so many have so much to say and do not know what they are talking about. The barrios have enough problems that the Fernandez crew ignore everyday. Now we are supposed to house illegals? Provide for illegals when there are no services for Dominicans? They are in danger in Santiago. Send them back FAST.

Good to see that they are standing up for themselves without killing the illegal Haitians. As for what matador said, at least this is a start. Would you rather them do nothing about the situation because the situation is too overwhelming? That's a defeatist attitude. I think the movement will snowball into an avalanche little by little. When your back is up against the wall there are only two choices. Either you can fight your way off of the wall or stay there and rot. People like Bernard would rather you stay with your back against the wall and rot peacefully with love.
From: United States
@mandoafrika - You completely misunderstand what I am saying. Its not about standing on a wall and doing nothing. Sometimes actions ARE necessary, however the RIGHT actions are needed. The Government should be responsible for the removal of illegal Haitians, not just the people in general as that is just a recipe for disaster.
From: United States
One thing that sweet micky has learned from preval during his talk with Leonel Fernadez is that these illegal Haitians they they are removing from DR are are not like him. They are poor , uneducated .
Futhermore , the men don't wear panties and bras like him.
From: United States
The problem with idealists such as yourself Bernard,is that you are blinded by your own idealism. The Dominican government should be responsible for the removal of ILLEGAL HAITIANS but the REALITY of the situation is that the Dominican government has never taken RESPONSIBILITY . That is how the problem festered to become as dire as it is. Only a weak-willed people will remain complacent with their backs against the wall forever. The strong-willed will fight or at least attempt to fight their way off of the wall at some point in time. There comes a certain point when a person or a people are so uncomfortable with their status-quo that it becomes "change now or rot away & die". This is the test of life & nature that separates the resilient from the meek. Under pressure, something that is strong will only bend like bamboo and something that is weak will shatter like glass. The history of the DR (3 fights for independence & 2 fights against the US occupiers)paints a picture of fighters.
From: United States
So think about you are saying, if the Dominican Government has NEVER taken responsibility for anything EVER, then what does that say?? What does that indicate about the Political figures that are voted in?? Why are they constantly being voted in?? Are they being corrupted at some point and thus made ineffective?? If the Government has NEVER EVER done anything concerning the issue, then WHAT gives you or anyone else ANY INDICATION that things will change with the next Government (which might even be the EXACT same one in place now)??? So removing Haitians will not do anything if the Government is allowing them to just come right back, no?? Therefore removing some elements of the Government is the key. That is not being idealistic that is being REALISTIC. If (according to you) the Government has NEVER done anything, then it has to start WITH the Government. Communities rising up to do what the Government won't is courageous, but it is at best a temporary patching of leaks.
From: United States
I did not say that the Dominican Government has never done anything concerning the issue (which is false). What I did say is that they have never taken responsibility (which is true).
Simple cause and effect. Doing something doesn't equal taking responsibility. If you leave the sunroof open on your car in the middle of rain storm the interior of the car is going to get wet. If you never take responsibility for making sure that the your sunroof on your car is always closed whenever your car is exposed to rain then little by little your car interior is going to get flooded and eventually ruined (especially if it's leather). The positive news from this story is that these Dominicans made a threat and followed through on that threat. If this becomes routine then illegal Haitians will know that the DR is done being a doormat.
