Calle Conde strollers are being watched.
SANTO DOMINGO. - The National Police announced Monday that a vigilance system in parts of the city where crimes are most frequent will start operating Tuesday.
Police spokesman Máximo Báez said 400 cameras have been strategically placed in downtown Santo Domingo, according to a study that determined the areas where most holdups and other crimes occur in the city.
He said the Police has created a specialized department to operate the cameras, which will be in operation 24-7.

Calle Conde is one of the safest streets in the capital with a good number of tourist police and these cameras are not needed there ..why not try the Duarte area above Mexico

Not so sure I welcome cameras.
With a police organization showing little effort for arresting crime and, in fact, exhibiting a disposition for participating in it due to high corruption and greed, I suppose this would only help identify high value targets to give coordinates to the "tigueres".
What about frequent blackouts? Would there be backup for this equipment?
Better check who is profiting from acquisition of this equipment. Check out supplier; chances are high he is connected to a senador, diputado or syndico, etc.

What a waste of money until we have a justice system to prosecute and the people manning the cameras aren't corrupt it is all a waste of time and money.

I wonder if anyone has actually seen any of these 400 cameras ..I keep my eyes open around town and I have seen none and as very few people report simple robberies in the streets I cannot imagine how a study could be conducted . In other cities they are put near automatic cash machines and near betting shops ...it will be interesting to keep looking out for these cameras which I am sure will have a short life .

I think is a good idea only if they had a good judicial system to prosecute those caught on camera committing a crime. Corruption will render the cameras obsolete and the bribes to erase the recorded activities will increase

Boy I sure hope there is electricity when I am getting robbed so that the camera captures the culprit or that the thug didn't first break it by throwing rocks at it like the thugs that break the light bulbs at el Malecon.
Jokes aside (though they are not far from being a joke) It is a good initiative.

what a joke the police don't do anything when crime happens in front of their faces and from what i have seen the organization, education and motivation to operate such a high tech system is sorely lacking. the only winner in this one is the company that sold and installed the system *probably for much more than market value!*

If crime is that bad, then all power to it. it could hurt tourism hence economy if hold ups & such aren't fully eliminated. Does Jamaica & others in the Caribean region have enough criminal activity to warrant this type of surveillance? Is the Dominican capital the only one in the region with cameras? Does anyone in this panel know & can answer my questions? I'm just curious.

Hey Espada, good piece of information. I always thought US as the most violent nation in the world. I'm glad I'm wrong.

London is loaded with cameras and police and ultra-strict gun control, but England is the most violent country in all of Europe.
