Santo Domingo.- Education minister Melanio Paredes last night announced the total suspension of the beleaguered school breakfast program citing lack of guarantees to preserve the health and even the lives of the students.

The official told news source listin.com.do that president Leonel Fernandez himself recommended the measure and confirmed five new cases, four girls and one boy, sickened by the school breakfast in two schools in Haina (south) last night, who were taken to the local hospital.

Just hours after the program resumed in public schools on Tuesday, 17 children in two grade schools in central Cotuí had to be hospitalized with symptoms of food poisoning, after drinking milk and eating sponge cake provided by the dairy company Maria, of San Francisco (central).

Shortly after Paredes confirmed the report but noted that it wasn’t poisoning, and “lactose resistance” instead.

“Before those events and a series smaller events which occurred betwee yesterday and today and on president Fernandez’s instructions I announce that as  of this Friday the school breakfast will not be provided in any school in the country, neither solid nor liquid,” the official said.

Finaly an admission now they can correct the problem.

What is wrong with fresh fruit for schools it is much more nutrisious than sponge cake.

Like the old saying goes, "if you want a job done right, do it yourself", in other words parents that want their precious children to be well fed will have to take it upon themselves. End of story.

Bring in the Indians and let them run it. They run the biggest school meals program in the World with some kitchens supplying 100,000 children hot/warm food.

China has been having problems as well!

China campaigning on school food safety
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2010-05-12 20:01BEIJING - China's Ministry of Education and the State Food and Drug Administration have jointly launched an eight-month campaign to ensure food safety in school dining halls.

The campaign will run from May to December and focus on food services certification, sanitation, workers' health, dish washing, food processing and food additives, according to a statement released Wednesday.

Local schools have been ordered to check food-safety conditions in their dining halls and remedy any defects, to improve food standards and ensure the health of students, the statement said.

In April, a milk company suspended production after its milk was blamed for the vomiting and stomachaches of about 200 middle and primary school students in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

An investigation showed filling machines' valve shafts at the company's operations had corroded.

If I remember my story on the tainted milk in China the owners were executed along with the minister in charge.

In the DR the minister gets a medal.

The answer lies in finding a new supplier not terminating the program!

Carlos

The hiatus in breakfast service was precisely for that: organize new supply.

Probably same useless scumbags that changed their company name, but went on feeding the kids the same schnitt.

The worst part is : those guys can´t run a school breakfast service wihout poisoning the kids. I wonder what the country's condition really is like once you remove all the cover-ups.

Dreadful.

What a joke. No accountability and now this news story will fade away. I for one will not forget how our government and especially LF let our children get poisoned by school food and did nothing about it.

you gotta love this

symptoms of food poisoning, after drinking milk and eating sponge cake

drinking milk and eating sponge cake. you have to be kidding me! i refuse to believe that a school breakfast program includes esponjoso! these are demented creatures! with all the nutritious foods available in the world, these cretins feed school children some useless rubbish like sponge cake, which has less than no nutritional value?i give up. there is no hope.

Dread,

who cares about nutritional value?

It's economic value they're after.

Zero nutrition. Money for nothing.

dreadlocks you are correct. Our country produces and exports some very nutritious and delicious fruits and this is what our government supplies to our children in school? Somebody needs to corner LF and get some answers to questions like these from him.

Veronica, when i went to school, the school lunch was a glass of fruit juice, and an empanada. those were baked versions, not fried. but they had nutritious qualities , and they were cheap to make. what the heck is some sponge cake doing in a school meal, when kids can get some meat, along with other members of the food groups?
