Santo Domingo.- Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal yesterday affirmed that airborne with radioactive particles pose no risk to the country, but did caution against what in his view is a high seismic risk.

In press conference together with Health minister Bautista Rojas, the official announced that both departments are on the alert to control and handle substances which may contain dangerous levels of radiations, moving with the waters of the Caribbean Sea, as the treaties of Basil and Cartagena stipulate.

The officials affirmed that there’s no need for alarm in the population from the crisis in Japan’s nuclear reactors sparked by the quake and tsunami.

Environment minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal :
in case you have not notice, there is something call the atmosphere which we share we our fellow human beings, if radiation is the atmosphere chances are that radiation might end up in DR and the Americas.

Please review Chernobyl Data

I must say that this is the silliest article I have read for a long time ....to think that the department of health and the department for environment could control and handle dangerous levels of radiation is the height of sillyness....How?? I suggest that no latin or caribbean country is any way prepared to deal with air that is contaminated with such dangerous particles .
We are not prepared for an earthquake nor a tsunami nor for contaminated air so it is ludicrous to suggest we are ...I imagine in such an event it would be everyman for himself and his family and all government officials would be running for their dear lives

We breathe polluted air all day.

Doesn't kill as fast, or make you look funny as do nuclear rads, but will still kill you.

We can't even deal with the jalopies that have invaded our roads and pump out tons of pollutants day in day out; still they talk about handling radio-active substances.

Walter P you are so correct ..in my home in Zona Colinial I have an open area in the centre and every afternoon it is covered in black muck ..I have replaced all the natural louvres with glass to isolate the house ..The reason for the pollution is the small factories and work shops in a very crowded barrio and allthe filth belching from the delapidated vehicles ..it is quite an easy thing to fix but no one tries .

Nothing worse than an "internet expert"!

They would be running for dear life, if all the money and cocaine lands in the ocean they would nose dive to go get it.

What the hell dose he know about radioactive particles. I will bet anything that the DR dose not even have a radioactive particles monitor.

BUNCH of freaking Clowns....

One can not do a great deal about atmosphere pollution at times (EXCLUDING AUTOMOBILES) but one of a more serious nature exists right in the D.R. medical facilities. Exposure to radiation due to the fact most units are not housed in lead lined walls. I saw a chest x-ray unit with the film holder attached to the WINDOW of the room in a local PUBLIC HOSPITAL. Every time a chest xray was taken and anyone was outside the window/wall got FRIED I do not think there is a full understanding of radiation dangers in the D.R. and thank God there is no Nuclear power plants.
