NAVARRETE, Dominican Republic. - Violent protests rocked the northwestern town yesterday, where vandals torched three vehicles in protest to a 20 year prison sentence against Luis Jose Fernandez, a leader of the feared group,  Fuerza de la Revolución (FR), in the death of two people during a 2009 riot.

The Police said unidentified vandals hurled a firebomb at a house in the section Villa Olga, destroying three vehicles, one of them owned by Ines Maria Disla, who asked the authorities to investigate.

Since early Wednesday morning several explosions from homemade bombs were heard in different sectors, as police increased street patrols to prevent incidents, in a city where many, often violent protests have been staged throughout the years.

Just another example of Tigueres controlling the streets instead of the police who are habitually "reactive" instead of proactive. Certainly, Ines has likely been terrorized by local street gangs and corner drug dealers for years who carry illegal weapons. Now, of course if a law-abiding citizen like Ines were to have an illegal gun or bomb then she would be taken to jail.

These riots are a symptom of an underlying dis-equalibrium where a small minority of Tigueres involved in illegal drugs, crime but "pay to play" with the local police who turn a blind eye. Consquently, the majority of citizens like Ines live in fear from the small minority of criminals. Talk about the "tail wagin' the dog"!

No one wants to use their authority to clean up the streets and you ultimately get a Mexico as criminals wax stronger than police some day.

What's all this madness about ?

Tigres in control of the city / population threw fear ?

I say surround and block off the whole city and let them burn and criminalize themselves. Nothing like containment....

OR....

Make a public announcement with a 1 hour notice, warn the good folks to leave then let the army and police conduct a sweep of the whole city, dub it Operation Mass Clean Sweep O.M.C.S for short, have the national media do a live report to insure no brutality or abuse on either sides.....if shot at then return fire with devastating results.

These radical criminals are part of the problem never part of the solution.

This is a complex situation.

The elements of the popular groups are not all criminalized, and although their methods are questionable, their goals are different than the street gangs'.

Now, when there's going to be a huelga in Navarrete, the vagos, the tigueres and the popular groups are all together wreaking havoc. The next day, the tigueres still own the streets.

There are serious social problems in Navarrete and nobody seems to care until tragedies happen.

The cleanup should start with the Police dept. They should all be transferred and new faces brought in. Then, active police patrolling and involvement.

Above all, at national level: those "huelgas" should be prevented from happening. There is so much police of all kinds in the DR, including stoolies, that it should be impossible to start a huelga and if it does happen, it can be squashed in 20 minutes.

Looks like the political culture is to allow the good folks to blow off a little steam.

This must be stopp

WalterPolo,

I admit not knowing all the facts.

In my opinion the trick would be to establish a separation between these groups. Any participation from the "non criminalize popular groups" involving rioting, unrest, burning etc..etc.. would only debunk their legit purpose / cause.

Most radical criminal elements just look for the big numbers only in order to seek more support....the oldest tactic in the book the "US vs. THEM" mentality thus creating more of a separation with no real solutions. A lack of Leadership ?

One has to ask.....
Where's the mayor / local city officials at in this case ?

Are the people of Navarrete being represented ?

How did Navarrete get to this point ?

What's it gonna take before real action is taken.....more civil disturbance, blood shed or lost of more lives ?

The non criminal popular groups should focus more attention on SOLUTIONS.....leaders leading by example.

Gov. only solutions, set your self up for more failure.

Eltinaje01,

LOL My friend have you ever wondered.......

What a way to celebrate "fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen" is she any way related to "la Virgen de Guadalupe", "La Viegen de Alta Gracia" or "La Virgen de Santa Maria" and so on....

LOevenLouder I hope those "sweet girls" you meet are over 18 years of age and if not.....they don't have loving caring Fathers, Brothers, Uncles, Husbands or boyfriends.

AND.....

I hope your Cibaena esposa doe's not have a Dominicana anger management bi-polar problem or is a revenge seeking "young stud boys" esposa.

LOnoMore....They say "what goes around, comes around".

ON THE SEROUS SIDE......

I can only hope your wish that "everything calms down" is for the sake of.....

NO DEATH, VIOLENCE / INJURY, RIOTING and LOOTING to the innocent Woman, Children and the people of Navarrete.

Take care.

riosm-amigo mio, when i said "sweet girls" i didn't mean little girls. would you have been happier if i had said "sweet women". to me it doesn't have the right ring to it. aside from that, you sounded like you were preaching some morality. there was a great prophet who, in the 6th century, after some tribal warfare, said " why should i deny myself the pleasure of a women". i feel the same way.

Eltinaje01,

My bad....I totally mistook your post, my apology, a preacher I'm not. Morality is only conscience felt on my side.

Hopefully the people of Navarrete with choose the ballot route at the next municipal election not the bullet route I would hate to our Country tear it's self apart from the inside out.

I believe you sound like a man of honor. Reality is our Country's Men look at our woman as sex objects.....and to think those men have Mothers, Wives, daughters, Aunts and girlfriends.

I was shocked the last I was in the DR and noticed how many under 18 year old Females have Children by older men. One has to ask.......where's those Female's fathers.

WalterPolo,

I have to be fair and give him the benefit of a dought and go by his word as a man, a married man at that.....he did mention he was "casado".

Now...as far as that 6th century Prophet ? Hopefully that prophet was talking about his wife not one of the spoils of war.
