Santo Domingo. - Korea’s International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on Wednesday donated US$500,000 to build the Ministry of Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion Center for Youngsters in the Dominican Republic.
The donation is part of an agreement between the two entities and forms part of the “Pregnancy prevention project in adolescents and the strengthening of medical assistance for young Dominican women.”
Women’s minister Alejandrina German said modern mammography equipment was also given to the Public Health Ministry, to support sexual and reproductive health services in provincial hospitals at Santiago Rodriguez, La Altagracia, San Cristóbal, Barahona, Espaillat and Puerto Plata.
She said the funds will be used to build and furnish the center, in her words, a pioneering initiative in the country, which will operate on the perspective of human and gender rights.
German said the facility center will provide information, education and counseling on sexual and reproductive health, to prevent the risky conducts in adolescents and young women, especially to prevent early pregnancy, maternal mortality, HIV and violence.

Interesting that a nation that was once poorer than DR in the late 1950s should now have the means to support health initiatives to help the once richer nation. South Korea has made the difficult transition into the modern league of nations. That significant achievement is one we, in DR, can only wish or dream about. How did South Korea achieve such a wondrous transformation from poor member of the international community to a modern powerhouse of high tech, strong education, and massive export platform? Long, tough, and consistency in its modernization drive. Very low wages at first, harsh working conditions, long tough universal education, central government targets, and more, more effort and pain. After several decades of doing so, the benefits have arrived and what a bountiful!! South Korea is one of the Great success stories of modern economic development. They did not run shy of the Export Led Industrialization Model, nor the Universal Education schemes, but embraced them

Dread,
What South Korea's journey shows is that it is possible to modernize and develop a nation from poor status to modern rich status. The journey is painful and requires huge sacrifice, especially from the people, over several decades, 3 or 4, at a minimum. I once had a professor from south Korea ask me why is your country, DR, underdeveloped? It has so many advantages and is close to the largest consumer market, USA, on earth! At the time I told him that lack of elite consensus and in-fighting coupled with a long dictatorship that usurped many of the capitalist initiative of the local elite thus denying the modern development of capitalism in DR.
DR had its moment as I've expressed before after the aborted Civil War of 1965. But our leaders did not follow the painful but remunerative path of real modernization and development. Sad but an illustrative tale of two countries and path divergence development.

I used to visit South Korea every year for about 10 years and it is indeed a most remarkable story but doubly remarkable because so many men of working age were killed in the war ,,,millions ,When you go to Korea you can not help but be amazed at the fact that there are so few old people and how nearly all the buildings which are unadorned and rather ugly date from the decade after the war .The climatic conditions are also harsh yet they survive and prosper with export led industries .
I would much much rather live in the DR with Dominicans in the very laid back , rather lazy Dominican way ..there is a great difference between Asians and Latins and I would not judge which is the better but in economic energy terms it is no contest .Asians win hands down .

I am not holding my breath for Hispanola to become ¨free of this brain-washing propaganda¨. Fundamentalist Islam is taking over the middle east, and fundamentalist Evangelist Christianity is taking over USA. We are slipping in to another Dark Ages, probably deeper than the last, due to technology.

Sorry, @Ricardolito,
You are wrong on nearly all counts:
Just because attendance at Catholic Churches (and your precious Anglican Church) is dropping off, religion is booming in DR and elsewhere. Fundamentalist Evangelist churches are making a killing in the DR.
The Vatican is still the richest multinational corporation in the world (assets, income, tax exemption, diplomatic immunity, banking, secular industries, influence in government, brand awareness, etc.) they don´t poor DR peasant clients.
So-called ¨moderate¨ churches have no future - smart, educated moderates become Atheists and stupid, uneducated ones become fundamentalists.
You are right that Atheists have something missing in their life - fear of eternity in the fires of hell or reliance on an imaginary friend in the sky.
@dreadlocks

You are half right - people are not ¨finding¨ god, they already believe in Jesus but are just switching brands due to very aggressive marketing.
i stand corrected. but the constant , Roy, is that they believe in something other than themselves. instead of relying on their inputs to improve their conditions, they are going to the iglesia 6 nights a week, hoping that the sky god will finally get around to responding to their supplications, and award them a visa to the kingdom of plenty.

Very Wrong!

According to Wikipedia, in China ¨40% and 60%, is mostly agnostic or non-religious¨
The minority of Asians who are religious are Buddhist and do not believe in a god. Buddha is a state of being, not an imaginary friend in the sky, listening to prayers and making statues cry or putting images of himself on burnt toast.
Still, as a Xtian, you must not let reality get in the way of your blind faith!

@dreadlocks
I assume your ¨visa to the kingdom of plenty¨ is life in heaven after death.
There is a fundamental difference between the products sold by Catholic and Evangelical churches.
Catholics promise reward in heaven after death, and avoidance from eternity in torment in hell, by believing in Jesus and the Pope, and feeling guilty for your (and Adam´s) life of sin.
Evangelists by contrast promise miracle cures and financial windfalls in this life, provided you pay them enough money then wait your turn.
Many DR Catholics believe in Jesus and voodoo so are ripe for conversion to Evangelism, and the lotteries (bancas) are booming too! Where I live there are no news-stands, bookshops or libraries, but there is a bar, banca or a god-shop on nearly every corner.
From: United States
Roy, i guess this is what i have been saying, forever. the Evangelists here believe in some gospel of plenty, whereing a benevolent God will multiply their contributions to the collection plate, multiple fold. just keep coming to service, bring your money for the collection plate, buy the Bibles from the bookstore section, and, voila, one day it will be your turn. just like the banca, your number will come up. si Dios quiere. and, as you said, if there is a good investment in the DR, it is the banca. the compraventa runs a close second. followed by the cabana, disputing third place with the colmadon, or neighborhood watering hole.

By 2030 or 2040 the Singularity Moment will arrive and with it the frightening Epoch of AI with human features will be upon us. So, perhaps all this will turn out mute and those unable, unwilling to engage in higher thinking will slowly be parted while the rest, a minority, will follow the competition until either some new form of Human/AI amalgamation emerges. South Korea has plans to introduce one personal AI assistant in every Korean home come 2030. And how this development, perhaps also in Japan, will undergo the massive computational advancements that Moore's Law states giving us Humans a mere limited lifespan before we our selves fall short of the mark when compared to advanced AI models.
Of course, we can picture a rosy future of personal educators, no need to leave the home for schooling! Communal schemes to retain our social habits. And less need to birth children since personal assistants will fill in the void and provide help on demand.

3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510 ...
In the USA, I can walk with a t-shirt that says: "God loves you". Yet, if I walk with one that says: "There is no God", the loving Christians would beat me to death in the name of their Sky-Daddy.
Someone is always making money off of the gullible minds. An impoverished country will never advance as long as its occupants are waiting to go eat some delicious pie in Heaven -while the corrupt politicians brashly eat the country's entire pie. I read tirelessly here how the uneducated Haitians are badly behaving in the DR side, and how the DR education system is not functioning, well...
.....
You see, Illiteracy causes Poverty. Poverty causes Crime. Crime causes Insecurity. Insecurity causes Anxiety... Religion is blooming. Let's not talk about gender inequality. Now, do you think Microsoft, Toyota would invest in a situation like this?
I leave you with this: If Hispaniola secularly becomes free of this brain-washing propaganda, education would fix most of its problem. Both countries would live in Harmony. And I bet you that future DR generation would replace the word "Dios" in the flag ...unanimously.
I am not holding my breath for Hispanola to become ¨free of this brain-washing propaganda¨. Certainly Atheism is increasing in enlightened countries, however the world´s population explosion is happening in countries determined to remain uneducated. Also fundamentalism is on the rise and democracies and dictatorships are being replaced by theocracies. Fundamentalist Islam is taking over the middle east, and fundamentalist Evangelist Christianity is taking over USA. We are slipping in to another Dark Ages, probably deeper than the last, due to technology.
¨Ministry of Women’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Promotion Center for Youngsters in the Dominican Republic¨? - I have not noticed anything lacking in DR young women´s sexuality or fertility - both are leading the world! Where I live most girls are pregnant by 16 years of age, (Just like the ¨virgin ¨ in the holy buy-bull?), despite the ready availability of free contraception from the government.

I am an Anglican and my faith is important just as faith is very important in Japan and most Asian countries and I regard atheists as having something missing in their lives .I think the most horrible thing about religion is the influence of fundamentalists .It is they who cause the dreadful problems ...much better to live and let live.
You mention education in Finland, but you forgot to mention that according to Eurobarometer Poll (2005), only 41% of Finns believe there is a god, and according to Zuckerman (2005) up to 60% of Finns are agnostics, atheists, or non-believers.
Science, education & secularism = civilization, wealth & justice
Superstition, religious faith & ignorance = violence, poverty & corruption
some people believe
Great God will come from the sky
wipe away all suffering
and make everybody feel high
then, he goes on to remind
if you know what life is worth
you will look for yours on earth.
true words.
@dreadlocks
You are half right - people are not ¨finding¨ god, they already believe in Jesus but are just switching brands due to very aggressive marketing.
You say ¨faith is very important in Japan and most Asian countries¨
Wrong!
Very Wrong!
About 70 percent of Japanese profess no religious membership,[7][8] according to Johnstone (1993:323), 84% of the Japanese claim no personal religion.
Of course, we can picture a rosy future of personal educators, no need to leave the home for schooling! Communal schemes to retain our social habits. And less need to birth children since personal assistants will fill in the void and provide help on demand.
Hey I´m glad you mentioned cabanas. When I first came here and saw the cabana precinct of Santo Domingo, I thought it was a mini Las Vegas!
Still they provide a necessary service - where else can a girl take her boyfriend while still living with her parents and pretending to be a virgin? Where else can a boss take his secretary for lunchtime siesta?
Thank you for mentioning the Singularity Moment - I did not know about it before and have just started reading up on it.
Absolutely fascinating! My first impression is feasible, maybe even inevitable. It may lead to the destruction of humanity, or maybe it´s salvation - I need to read, l am and think more before forming an opinion.
Maybe some AI for DR may be a good thing ... fill the void in RI (real intelligence)?
You say ¨they do not understand the bare minimum about acoustics¨
You are wrong.
Every DR guys understands you turn up your sound system till you drown out the other guy, produce distortion and square waves to stuff-up your voice-coils, then buy new bigger amplifier and speakers to drown out the other guy´s upgraded system, and impose your own boring Bachata, tedious Merangue, or brain-dead Hip-Hop on the environment!
Damn, Roy! You really had my back and you really brought your stuff with you. Too bad, I cannot be as active as I'd like to be here in DT. Though, it's impossible for me to be as sharp as you.
@Dread
I am glad we made your day. And Roy did a very good job expressing his thoughts in this matter. Hopefully, others will grasp at least some of it, pause a bit, start thinking in a totally different manner.

@danny00,
You mention education in Finland, but you forgot to mention that according to Eurobarometer Poll (2005), only 41% of Finns
YES BUT IF MY MATH IS CORRECT WHICH 99% OF THE TIME IT IS THAT LEAVES THE FINS WITH 59%
Opps, I didn´t finish ...
only 41% of Finns believe there is a god.
The point I am making, is Finland´s advantage over DR is non-belief in an imaginary friend in the sky.
I rest my case!
You are right!
Faith cannot be debunked by evidence - the definition of faith is belief in things that don´t exist.
Believers are immune to logic and science - that is why they still believe in their imaginary friend in the sky!
Oh .. and next time you talk to God, can you ask him why he slaughtered thousands of innocent Egyptian children during the passover? Also ask what he was thinking about when he instructed Moses and the Israelites to rape all the Caananite virgins.
