Santo Domingo.- Former president Hipolito Mejia has won the opposition PRD party’s convention with 54% of the votes, to his rival the construction mogul Miguel Vargas’s 46%, in a convention marred by alleged irregularities.
Since early Monday the release of the first results on Sunday’s election had been postponed, as Vargas had challenged the results alleging that voters belonging to the ruling PLD party took part in the balloting.
Vargas, speaking to the press around 1 p.m. Monday, said he had warned of the likelihood of ineligible voters taking part, "but the Organizing Commission ignored our warnings."
"The government of the PLD intervened in the Convention of the PRD," Vargas said.
After hearing the results, Mejia said “you go to a contest to win or to loose.”
Several polls including Gallup predicted the former President’s win for the PRD.
The country’s attention now turns to the convention of the ruling PLD party, whose top echelon the Political Committee is scheduled to meet tonight, although a date for their internal election is expected to be announced.

So Hipoloco paid more than the RD$500 pesos Miguel was offering, it is a popularity contest, and rigged or not Mejia is a lot more popular in the PRD than Miguel, and Miguel is just doing what every Dominican politician does after losing to try to encourage "negotiations" and maybe under the table deals with HM.
I actually heard that the percentages were Hipoloco 59% and Vargas 41%. So the other 5% was probably "bestowed" on Vargas so he would not be a sore loser.

wents22-I agree and have always said the same thing. Vargas is a crook, you see it written all over his face. He has such a nasty looking appearance. His lips and mouth looks dirty, like he does not brush his teeth on a regular basis. But his wife, man she has some great pair of legs, how the F did she end up with him. Well I guess money does wonders for an older guy, in spite of his unappealing appearance. .

ACTUALLY, this is the IDEAL democracy, the figure of the president of DR has WAY too much power, Art. 55 on former constitution... i can assure you that if the PRD would have had Control of the Congress, something like the absence of 4% for education would have never passed, The opposing party will always block anything from the rulling one, not becasue is the right thing but becasue IT IS GOOD for THEM, that is politics plain ans simple.

Well i think you are in fact underestimating This guy, just as Miguel did, just as Danilo did, and Just as Leonel is DOING...i think is trully unfortunate that Mr. Mejia is even an option of Power on this counrty after all what happened, personally i Voted for him , then aganist HIM, NOTICE the word, AGANiST, which is NOT as voting for the PLD...but people who anlize this "en FRIO" will notice that Mejia has indeed the strongest opposition to this goverment, will also notice the change on this guy's strategy by even saying that he made a mistake by running...something that the vast mayority of the population
