LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic. - La Romana police said it recovered the body of the American tourist Simón David Boozer, 75, who drowned Monday afternoon in a beach of Catalina Island.

The foreigner, who was staying in a hotel at Juan Dolio, near the capital of Santo Domingo, was snorkeling in the beach with his wife Patricia, 69, who revealed that her husband had undergone cardiac problems recently.

First responders recovered the body which was taken to the morgue of a La Romana hospital, from where it was sent to the Forensics Institute in San Pedro, to determine the cause of death.

According to his wife, the victim liked to take vacations in Dominican Republic because of the climate, peacefulness and protection for the tourists along its coasts.

That picture should be removed DT. The words are enough to convey the news.

I'm in complete agreement with you Atabey.

Dominican media have a tradition of being graphic ad nauseam.

Blood, guts, macabre scenes, you name it. Newspapers, TV, magazines, it's all under the theme "gory".

What if the victim was family of the photographer? Or a known politikero?

Respect, co..azo.

Latino media in general are very graphic. When I watch news from Mexico, I see blood and guts spilled all over.

The picture reminds me of that magazine "Sucessos", they used to show all types of crazy gore stuff on there.

One ´undergoes´ an operation, and ´suffers´ from cardiac problems.
If your English is not sufficient, there are people who offer proofreading services, translations etc.
I am not allowed to enter my contact information, but would be happy to help out.

I am in agreement.
Seems hardly respectful yet no strange.
I have witnessed crowds here in the DR around fatal car accidents acting as if it were free entertainment to view.

Actually,

Everywhere but the U.S. tends to be pretty graphic, have you seen the actual English (not the American) BBC?

I have come to accept and see the logic in the US news reporting ways where victims are not pictured for the sake of their respect and respect of their families, but the truth is, graphic news as these are the norm pretty much everywhere... I guess you could call it uncensored journalism.

But aside from this. RIP Mr Boozer. May God Bless thee.

Truly sad....I sure would NOT like my loved one displayed for public viewing, they should of at least covered the body and remove it a.s.a.p.

True story....years back I knew a friend who works for the fire dept. and was called on an emergency to assist in removing the 3 badly injured and a fatality, only to find out the body [badly disfigured] he helped pull was his 17 year old Daughter.

Dave as we know him in Anniston, Alabama, USA was one of the very best kind of men. He was a successful architect, a photographer, a volunteer, a father, and a husband. He was the former president of our Rotary club and a major cheerleader for the Rotary International Foundation, personally contributing and additionally raising many thousands of dollars for international projects that help victims of national disasters, that puts water wells in poor nations around the world, and help eradicate polio around the globe, etc. He was a gentleman and a very good friend to many- many he never even met and had a major impact on my life. I find it very disrespectful that this paper chooses to display such an offensive photo and even more disappointed by some of the small minded comments made by those above. It is hurtful to see the pictures and the comments about someone so great, noble, and humble who has helped so many through his generosity over the years. His motto was Service Above Self.

DerekCB,

Thank you for sharing his MAN's wonderful life and contributions made to all mankind. My heart felt condolences to his Wife, Children, Family and friends. I hope this tragedy serves as a motivating factor to guide others into service....I believe helping others goes beyond self serving.

Take care.

Some people just hate DR, just by their comments you can sence their hatred toward our country, and the sad part is they go around saying they are Dominican; they only wish.

I said people, cause I don't wanna call them anything else.

To all those who knew this fine man,
Let me apologize for the horrible manner that this poor soul has been dis-regarded.
I, like him, travel here for the warmth of the land and it's people.
What you are experiencing is a bad example of this fine country.
I have made several calls to this paper to ask for their respect and consideration.
Unfortunately, they are not attentive.
Again, I am so sorry for you.
Take comfort in knowing he was doing what he loved before passing.
Prayers to his family and friends.

riosm,

I doubt Efghrtsdf is a real person. This looks like the work of a bot that exploits sites like these. I have suggested DT NUMEROUS times to implement CAPTCHA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA) on their sign up page as well as when people post comments. Yes it is a little extra step for all of us, but it will keep exploit bots from doing what their are doing now.

The thing is, implementing CAPTCHA is fairly easy, not sure why DT keeps putting this to the side.

But I do feel bad for the man Mr. Boozer and his family.

I was one of the first contributors to write about and against these kinds of displays. Bad form, bad taste, and blatant insensitivity all lead to one thing, bad journalism. Why doesn't DT rise to the occasion of being "unique" in the DR's media storehouse and return "class" to the profession?

My condolences go out to the family and friends of this gent.

Thank you Dominican Today for removing the photo of my friend's body. And thank you to all of you who have made kind, thoughtful, and supportive comments about Dave. @walnut- Thank you for calling the paper to lobby for the removal of the photo. I know Dominican citizens are good-hearted and great people and your thoughtful comments have reinforced that. If you're interested in an article in our regional paper that ran today about Dave, you can see it here: http://annistonstar.com/view/full....ea--dies-at-75?instance=home_news
