Santo Domingo.- Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez yesterday called on the Government to look into the cases where Health Risk Administrators (HRS) let patients die by denying them treatment for catastrophic diseases, despite that those services are paid as the law stipulates.

Interviewed in the Cathedral after Easter Sunday mass, the prelate said he’s aware of cases in which the HRS have refused to provide health services to patients with cancer and of other deadly diseases.

On Wednesday Public Health minister Bautista Rojas said he’ll take to Congress the issue of whether to eliminate the HRS’ intermediation in the Social Security system.

“I’ve also a witness to cases where it would be good for the authorities to examine the issue to establish the truth, and I know  because I have seen several cases  some HRS, they were not identified to me, which don’t attend nor fulfill their responsibility,” the prelate said.

Two weeks ago the ARS grouped in ADARS said they provided more than 23 million services to its affiliates at a cost of RD$16.0 billion in 2010

Yes, better to give the RD$16.0 billion government health funding to the church, then let the good Cardinal pray for the sick to be cured. RD$16.0 billion? An insignificant contribution when you consider what the Vatican pull in!

Thanks the good Cardinal for raising awareness of this social issue. I'm glad the kingdom of God on Earth is well and alive.

razon,
The Catholic Church should be aware of "social issues" in DR since it caused many of them. "kingdom of God on Earth is well and alive"? not in enlightened countries. Ahh... not like the glory days of Christianity, the Dark Ages. No more burning witches and torturing scientists - only banning condoms, stem-cell research and teaching evolution, and "loving" little boys ... Amen!
I think we will see more publicity stunts by the Catholic hierarchy in DR as they are losing market share to the more aggressive Evangelical churches. Then when Islam gets it's ugly foot in the door, the good Cardinal will lose more than his hat.
I wonder what the Muslim "kingdom of God on Earth " will look like in the new Dark Ages - Pope Urban II with nukes?

RoyStone,
I wonder how the papacy has become the oldest institution on earth? We are a community of saints prepare to die at any given moment. After all, there's life after death and the kingdom of heaven is greater that the kingdom of earth. You can keep your enlightened countries while I enjoy my life with my wife and my children under the great traditions of my catholic faith. I'll take my chances with the imperfect catholic church than with the ideology of enlightened government.
