Santo Domingo.- The news source northjersey.com reports Thursday that a group of Dominican students who journeyed to the U.S. to see democracy in action had hoped to see the White House, “but had to settle for the black granite of the Passaic County Administration Building in Paterson.”

It said 12 high school students traveling as the Dominican Republic Juvenile Parliament planned to visit Washington, D.C., to address the Organization of American States when they flew into JFK Airport on April 21. “But their trip was blown off course when they discovered that the Dominican Government official who had arranged their visas had allegedly pocketed the US$2,000 (around RD$60,000) that each student paid for hotels and meals.”

“Rather than cancel the trip, the students made hasty arrangements to stay with Dominican families in the metropolitan area. And the search to see democracy in action abruptly shifted from Washington to the halls of Passaic County government,” the news source said.

Quoting Bethania Marmolejos, a Wayne mother of two who had five students living at her house this week, it reports that, "for all of these students, it is the first time they have ever been to America," "They were thrilled to be here, and excited by what they saw."

It adds that Juana Manzueta, a chaperone with the group, was philosophical about the change in plans. "Everything happens for a reason," .

Nothing is sacred in the DR, There is a pestilence that has to be eradicated. Its just a shame that Leonel as the elected head of the Domincan Republic is such a corrupt official.

LOL.... Whats so philosophical about the government official pocketing the money and the sudden change of plans. Yeah, everything does happen for a reason. Might as well single out that official, because, this is embarrassing.

I think Juana was down with it.....The white house and the Passaic County Administration Building in Paterson are two totally different animal. She should be outraged !!!

think its long past time that we learned. NOW is the time to make PERMANENT CHANGES to our system. that will STOP the CULTURE OF CORRUPTION.
NO EDUCATION SO NO REAL CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT IN THE GOVERNMENT. when this happens, EMOTIONS REPLACE KNOWLEDGE, GRIDLOCK REPLACES CONSENSUS.

It would have been nice to know they were here, and needed to see the Justice system, this could have been arranged for them. Have they left the USA already, as we may still be able to help them.?

Honestly, now nothing surprises me about this country. But, hats off to the last minute "host" families who at least tried to help salvage something for the students. I hope that the students learn something by this experience, but I also hope it does not taint their attitudes for the remainder of their lives. The host families are living proof that good and honest people exist in this world.

What a bastard, stealing from students. The families and the students should protest firmly about this. Or, find the bastard and get the money back even if you have to dissect the mother "flucker" with a rusty old knife. Some idiot, a government official from DR said that the people of DR are damned. What a stupid bastard. He might be damned and just as many DR government officials are. My strong suggestion to DR people is to not allow idiots such as that one make remarks like that about "his" own kind, his compatriotas. I think he is a candidate for the presidency. Slap this guy upside the head or remove the fleas from his nappy hair with a sledge hammer. Do something to wake him up. The general public, the people are not damned. The corrupt officials are damned and must be saved; they must be put in a cell to be saved, LOL.... Good luck to the students in getting back what belongs to them. “STEALING”; that’s cheap ghetto behavior on the part of this DR official. What an animal!

First, do an investigation and if the guy is truly responsible, I agree with posting his picture and putting a bounty on his head. The young people should have their travel and expenses paid by the DR government or private interests. The US Dominican political group, small but growing, should be made aware of this and organize support for the young people.

More "democracy in action" in the Passaic County Administration Building in Paterson than in the White House in the District of Corruption.

Let's get to the bottom of this story.
DT do your job and investigate the facts.
Someone associated with the group determine if these students are still in the US.
If they have not returned home, I personally will arrange to have them transported to DC to fulfill their dream trip.
The lackeys in Washington are still on break, but the sights of Washington in springtime are marvelous right now.
We here in America can demonstrate a lesson in citizenship and honor to offset the lesson of corruption they experienced by the politico in SDQ.

And maybe one day, a future leader emerges from this student group to help to straighten out the mess in the DR.

It can not be helped its the faulty wire in the brain that all Dominicans are born with. I am convinced of this . There brain is normal except for a missing wire. They do not think being corrupt, lying is bad or wrong. They think its normal. They can not help themselves. Its called

"Dominican Missing-Wire Syndrome"

This is very embarassing for me as a Dominican-American. Wow. Even the kids don't get a break from the corruption and from a gov official no less. This will tarnish their image of their country for the rest of their lives. Perhaps for maybe just one of them it motivates them to make a difference in DR. That might be the saving grace in this...
