SANTO DOMINGO. – The ex Dominican ambassador in Haiti, Alberto Despradel on Tuesday called Michel Martelly’s victory in Haiti a popular defeat over a deeply anti-Dominican candidate, which in his view is Mirlande Manigat. “Manigat represents a deeply anti-Dominican tendency” because her ideas come from her husband, the historian Leslie Manigat, “who is deeply anti-Dominican.”
“What happened two weeks ago (Haiti election) was that the people swept away an aristocrat’s proposal,” the former diplomat said in an interview with Pablo McKinney on CDN.
Despradel said Martelly’s overwhelming victory was the result of adapting carnival to politics, noting that Haiti’s Carnaval is a popular challenge of power.
When asked how Martelly’s win influences Dominican Republic, the ex ambassador said what’s most important is to define and apply a migratory policy. “The important thing is that we sit down to define a State policy on immigration and trade, free from the pettiness of party politics.”

I agree with ex-ambassador's Despradel comments. Not only the Manigat's are self serving, snobs and part of the old Haitian intelligentsia, but their view of the world is condescending and they have a poor attitude towards the poor and less advantaged. They both have a "long tail" of corruption episodes and much finger pointing at them.
Michel Martelly is inexperienced but will hopefully restore Haiti to its previous grandeur, by concentrating on better relations with DR, planting trees, fostering agricultural production, and reversing the UN military intervention, into a peace corps type of UN volunteer corps.

Centuries ago, during the 17 TH and 18 TH century Haiti was considered to be the wealthiest nation of the new world, mostly because of the work of the slaves in the sugar plantations.
The Haitian army of slaves did defeat Napoleon's mercenaries, which was no easy feat, and even provided weapons for the Simon Bolivar liberation wars later.
After 1804 in their attempts for conquest and expansion to our side of the island, they were defeated by the glorious Dominican patriots and kicked back to their side of the island.
In and around the end of the 1850's Haiti went into a fast downward spiral economically, and remained so to this date, after a series of self serving dictatorships.

"In and around the end of the 1870's Haiti went into a fast downward spiral economically, and remained so to this date, after a series of self serving dictatorships."
The Haitian downfall happened rather earlier Generoso. In fact, the eastward imperial expansion was motivated by the poor economy after the Great convulsions generated by the Revolution of 1804. Haiti was trying to invigorate its morbid economy and needed to come to an agreement with her old colonial Master, France. The price France forced Haiti to pay is today valued at over 20 billion dollars! And seeing that Haiti was too poor to pay the reparation payments to France; the Haitian leadership decided that a takeover of the east would suit its future financial situation. Remember that the movement into the Spanish speaking eastern lands was a preamble to Haiti's final status agreement with France. Your point that Haiti was a player is largely correct IF we refer to the first 40 or so years of the 19th century.

You're right Walter. The Great Haitian generator of wealth was largely based on probably the world's greatest destruction or exploitation of humanity. Hundreds of thousands of slaves were worked until they could no longer be of any financial worth and then left to die. Another slave ship worth of human cargo to replace them waiting on the dock. The French and the small Haitian colonial elite lived royally and were the envy of the rest of the region. No other colony produced as much wealth for her mother country as Haiti. But after the French Revolution of 1789–1799, this world came aground rather quickly and viciously. The small but larger Haitian mulattoes and petit blancs that wanted a say and representation in the government and society of Haiti similar to the white colonial elite who held the top posts and had other privileges denied the aforementioned groups.

What really destroyed the Haitian economy, that was based on sugar production via cheap slave labor, was initially the "scorched earth" policy of the revolting slaves, burning and destroying the sugar mill machinery as well as their massacre and otherwise scaring into exile the petit blancs, who were the technicians that made artisan rum, and sugar.
Without the machinery and the know how or human capital, the Haitians where left without resources because of their own genocidal instincts and scorpion like policies.
Had Toussaint L'Overture not being kidnapped and died while in prison in France, Haiti's history would have probably been totally different than the one written by Jean Jacques Dessalines, a bitter mass murderer that hated white folks to death.
That along with the boycott of slaver nations that wanted to make an example of Haiti, grinding it to the ground, certainly did not help the Haitian economy.

PS: Dominicans did help and contributed to pay to Haiti part of the debt that was owed to France, by having their country ransacked and looted by the invading Haitian armies during 1822 to 1844, during the Haitian occupation.
Some of the most brutal accounts of the haitians murderous ways, was passed on by word of mouth and by many historians, and it does still influence the lack of love between Dominicans to Haitians.

Yucahu,
You dream of Haiti and the Dominican Republic involved in a war, you ignorant fool. Is this why you write into this forum, to stir things up, throw gasoline on the fire? Amazing that you pick one of the US cities (Miami) to live in, where Haitians make up a large part of the population. Dade County, Broward County, keep going upward all the way up out of Florida (many Haitians), out of Georgia (many Haitians), and into South Carolina (not many Haitians) and you won't find many Haitians in the Carolina's.
You need to just "get over it" - the rule of Haiti for 22 years. Were you around during those years? Can you tell me what happened during those years? Didn't they have great Dominican writers during those years to document these great atrocities? Can you point me to one document that outlines or describes in some detail the horrible treatment of Dominicans by Haitians?
Slaves like Frederick Douglas documented his treatment by the hands of his oppressors.

I came across this clip of two Dominicans fighting with the staff at a restaurant in New York. The staff gave their table to whites even though they had been waiting for a table. The actual video is not important but what is important are the racist comments aimed at these Dominicans. They are told to go eat watermelon and chicken. It tells me that whites treat Dominicans just like any other black person. The white world will never make the distinction that many Dominicans try to make - that they are not black or of African descent. I will never understand why so many Dominicans try to assimilate with a group (the real white race) that will never accept the lie that Dominicans are white or non-black.
I am happy that Jennifer Beals and Lena Horne never tried to hide behind their light skin to hide from the fact that they are black.

I have lived in the DR probably longer than you have been alive and to this day, many Dominicans that I know jump through hoops to try to convince others that they are not of African descent - a pure fallacy.

And please don't tell me that Trujillo killed thousands of Haitians in 1937, because that bastard killed thousands and thousands of Dominicans as well.
The occupation of the Dominican rep haiti Boyer was wanted by a ferocious dictator who shed the blood of the Haitian people as well.
A THOUSAND TRULIO not kill Haitians but 40 to 70,000 Haitians. I think you snake language. Latinos do not like you I understand why. I live in Haiti and the Cubans who are with us, we love you so that separate the same piece of land with us you are arrogant.

Pot or Prozac? HOLY COW You full of S..T ! learn History !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Dios, Patria y Libertad"
Juan Pablo Duarte .
I hope Mr Martely prove me wrong, the main issue I have with his selection is the fact that he is a neophyte with nothing more than great showmanship on his rersume' is he what Haiti need at this juncture I'm not sure. Understanding the predatory nature of politics and power in Haiti more than him it's those in his surrounding Im concern about, would he be able to say no to them.
Will love to see a fool like you in power in Haiti, and stupid enough to arm you armed force and monitor Dominican. this way we could have the international excuse to finish the Job that :
Juan Sanchez Ramirez hesitate to do 1809
To pass revenge for 1822 and Jose Nunez de Caceres 1822
To Finish the Job Juan pablo Duarte was not able to do 1844
and to reclaim the land Trujillo was force to give to Haiti in the 1929 peace treaty

and to send you back to you ancient homeland of Senegal were that country have offerd time and time again to take your miserable existent out this land you have poison with you bullshit way of living.
GET A f%^&& BOOK MAN, STOP BEING SO IGNORANT
HAITI's downward fall will simply continue with this clown at the helm.
And DR will continue to be invaded by starving Haitians.
Martelly parle-t-il français?
Or English?
Or is he going to be rappin´ to his people in a language nobody understands but them?
And make Haitians more unexportable than they already are?
I am happy that Jennifer Beals and Lena Horne never tried to hide behind their light skin to hide from the fact that they are black.

It's SUPER LOVER to the rescue!
Haitians make me puke everytime that I read comments like yours, always focusing on race (black, white, indian, etc), 200 years of backwards living doesn't teach your people nothing,
shows that you are resillient in being dumb and stupid, Dominicans in NY are way better than
what you describe, while your people live in dark ages Dominicans are business people, artists,
doctors, you name ! You know better but feel embarrassed about giving Dominicans credit for
what we are in the big apple.
learn some demographics bro...
He has always been wandering in the inner circle of power in Haiti.
He has always been the propagandist, the apologist , the worshipper of those terrorizing and slaughtering Haitian poor. I am glad he has converted to :Nationalism:
I will not allow you to pull me into one of your cesspool games of "me" against "you". I have never tried to put down Dominicans living in New York, you moron. I see that you missed my point entirely. Keep puking! My point was that Dominicans in New York and elsewhere are "perceived" as being black, not white. If you read the comment section of the link that I sent, white Americans are referring to Dominicans as watermelon and chicken eating ni**ers. I have lived in the DR probably longer than you have been alive and to this day, many Dominicans that I know jump through hoops to try to convince others that they are not of African descent - a pure fallacy.
Similar to Dominicans, Haitians living in the US are successful doctors, lawyers, businessmen and businesswomen. I am on this thread to support the idea of Dominicans and Haitians supporting each other and lifting each other through MUTUAL gains - not "me" against "you". Get it right!
In your dreams.
Not all Dominicans are black, but the vast majority are and most light skinned Dominicans are of African descent.
I am very light skinned, but rest assured, I will never embarrass myself by saying that I am not black.
You should go around the entire island and educate yourself a little bit regarding this matter.. I will invite you to come to Santiago, Santiago Rodriguez, Villa, ... these are places where large groups of whites, chinese, blacks, come together to form the core of the CIbao region... I grew up here and know the people and city, provinces and municipalities very well.
When I die and come back to life, I don't care what color I come back as. I will make the best of it, black or white or mixed. I now know what I want to do (professionally) when I do come back, I want to be a politician. Yesterday, I was making a delivery of a 40 ft container in Casa de Campo and I drove next to the house of M. Vargas. It looks like a small hotel. Luxury all the way.
Mirland Manigat is consider part of the elite because she has a PHD from the Sorbonne, and more comfortable expressing herself in the official language instead of the native dialect , that is how close she is to the real haitian elite ( The 15 families who run Haiti economically ,funny thing it's Mickey I saw in their Private charter jet on FB ). To our own detriment we Haitian will always choose a demagogue over substance. I have seen this movie before circa 1990.
Etienne great analysis
I just found out from one of my most trusted Dominican News websites www. radiobemba.net
that Martelly is actually one of leonel fernandez illegitimate children and the invasion of haiti is in full steam ahead.
stay tune for more inside info from el palacio nacional
[expletive} and i was so :stupid" i thought my blood lines go back to africa? thank god some on this site set me straight... thank-god....
any way.
some good development's for haiti.
one industrial park is being built in the north where korea's leading manufacturer and exporter of texiles and clothing is building in haiti its 1st fabric mill.617-acre's industrial park holds the potential for 1,000 of job's for the haitian's {they make clothes for the gap to just name one}an other industrial park is being built out side of port-auprince.
lots of jobs will be coming from these projects.
good luck!!!
You mentioned living in DR for long time i grew up in the DR, and perceive the population as been diverse, there are blacks, whites, mullattoes, chinese, japanese, arabs, jews, americans, haitians which are all dominican nationals... and recently the increasing amount of illegals..
You should go around the entire island and educate yourself a little bit regarding this matter.. I will invite you to come to Santiago, Santiago Rodriguez, Villa, ... these are places where large groups of whites, chinese, blacks, come together to form the core of the CIbao region... THE HATE HAS TO GO FOR ALL OF US TO LIVE THE LIFE GOD-HAS GIVEN US.

Do you remember any of Mr Aristide theology of liberation sermons from the pulpit. Who was not moved by that. What was his promise to the masses again. for Last month pay period nobody in the entire Haitian foreign diplomatic corp including consulates got a pay check, there was no funds in the budget. You have 8 Police officers for every 1000 citizens, never mind the tent cities population, %60 of our annual budget depend on foreign aid. Paying taxes is a word frowned upon by the Haitian private sector, we all want 24hour electricity but raise hell when we get a proper bill from ED'H. Do you mind telling us where is the funding going to be coming from for such a lofty goal . I support the people's choice but its his entourage Im concern with.
Only Aristide can deliver 70% of the votes
I really hope Im wrong. I want to see this nation thriving in every segment of society.
