NEW YORK.- Hordes of rats and cockroaches are again disgusting residents of the Upper Manhattan districts of Washington Heights, Inwood and Marble Hill neighborhoods home to many Dominicans, to the point that elected officials scrambled for solutions Wednesday.
Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, Manhattan Borough president Scott Stringer and community activists voiced their concern and demand that mayor Michael Bloomberg restore the funds trimmed from the Health Department budget, a measure which left only 50 pest control workers.
Residents complain that the rats “seem right at home” among trash cans, garbage, buildings, cellars, subway lines, sewers and ditches in those sectors, where thousands of residents affirm the rodents and roaches pose a threat to the health of many of them, including children.

What do the residents expect? Too many people live in the Upper Manhattan districts.

Rats and Roaches have been around NY for as long as could remember. If they have not figured out how to eradicate them by now, I doubt throwing a few millions dollars at the problem is going to be a solution. The first thing we must do is concentrate on sanitation and personal responsibility, focus on cleanliness and good housekeeping, then afterward we can talk about other alternatives.

Really, I have seen them all around the DR! Especially in places like Sosua, El Batey, and Puerto Plata. But, I see them most of the time during the day! When they come out during the day and they are not afraid, you know there's a lot of them out there..........

Roy,
Remember I mentioned about cleanliness in cities outside of Australia?
This is an example that Santo Domingo is not rock bottom "rubbish" as you think,
I actually took pictures while in north NJ of horrendous garbage on certain parts of certain cities.

They were here long before man, they will be here long after we are gone.
If you want to control their population, stop feeding them. Plain and simple.
