Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s campaign to elect a president next year has been spiced with the promotions “Papa has come” of ex president Hipolio Mejia, and now with “Watch it Pops, Mama is here,” of the first lady Margarita Cedeño de Fernandez.
Cedeño’s bid for the ruling PLD party’s candidacy has gathered steam in the last few weeks through the media and huge billboards on the Capital’s major avenues, jus days away from Sunday, when the organization’s Central Committee meets to select the contenders.
On Thursday morning news outlet Nacional, quoting a source close to Cedeño’s political team, said though the first lady hasn’t publicly stated whether she’ll accept that her hat is thrown into the ring, “she’s very excited at the possibility of being a candidate.”
The First Lady’s potential bid is backed by the very promoters of president Leonel Fernandez the reelection and even by near collaborators of the Head of State.

Oh great... This is going to be a race to the bottom!
The DR does not need a bloody parent, it needs a president who will be a quality public servant, that serves all the people, not just their politically connected, the politicos, or clientelist networks.
Instead of coming up w/ STUPID slogans that reflect the clientelist and paternalistic nature of Dominican politics as practiced by the PLD, PRD, PRSC, and their satellite parties, why not aim to a democratic, policy, public good discourse that presents a clear political agenda on how the candidates propose addressing the social, economic, political, environmental, health, education ills facing the country.
If the candidates did this, maybe then the political parties won't have to give people RD$500 to go to the campaign activities or eventually to vote. Instead, people will participate b/c they want to support a particular political agenda that is more about policies, rather than clientelist connections.

She is not prepared intellectually, mentally nor in any other way to be President. She is a common ordinary insipidia with not a clue about world affairs. She would be a huge embarassment to our wonderful country and would most likely be a puppet for the QUEEN she married. What a creepy couple they make. She is not deserving in any way shape or form. She is not well educated and in fact is not well spoken. Listen to her. WHAT A JOKE

I am going to agree with everyone that it would be horrible to have her as a candidate and who wants the sort of dynasty that was in Argentina and destroyed that country eventually

@CarmenReyes: You have the right to not like Margarita but to go on and say she is a common insipida actually makes you look quite ignorant, given the fact that this woman whether you like it or not, is an accredited lawyer, graduated cum laude and has received posterior education at institutions such as Georgetown, Harvard and Universidad de Salamanca in international affairs and political science. Now, I understand that none of this means she will make a good leader, but it certainly does make her someone who you would expect would have certain knowledge about world affairs and not be "clueless" as you make it seem. @JEM,
Just to level field, I'd really like to know what she majored in at Harvard and Georgetown, and was she admitted as First Lady, or own her own merits.
As far as her Domincan credentials, did she earn her "cum laude" status, or was it just given to her?
There is something that just seems incongruous about the whole thing here. Husband not that good looking and maybe not even that smart. Lady, before she gained weight, was lawyer of seemingly good schooling and achievement, and not that bad looking. Natural question: what did she see in him and why did she marry him? It all just doesn't seem that smart to me.

$$$ can buy a lot and if you listen to her she is not well spoken. I have serious doubts about the validity of those credentials and God help her if they are not legitimate. She may have taken a course here or there in name but she is not capable in any way to be President. She is not obviously intelligent and I question the resume you have thrown here. El papel aguanta todo!! You can write anything but it does not make it the truth. You obviously do not live here in DR and I question your view points. She never had any professional capital before she was selected to be the wife of the snake. I do not compare Mejia to anyone. I never said he was a Saint. However, as a Dominicana life was safer during his 4 years than now and that is not disputed by many!!!

Glomar: First of all, the answer to your questions regarding MF's credentials are stated in my previous paragraph and can be easily verified. Secondly, your statement questioning why a woman would marry someone who is less attractive than her is a bit shallow. Is it really that hard to believe that a man has "game" and knows how to properly enamour a woman or better yet, is it that impossible to believe that maybe she isn't so shallow that she would only marry someone based on looks? You speak as if you know these folks to jump to your conclusions. Why do you paint Leonel as someone who's so "beneath" her? Do you know his credentials? Also, while I disagree with many of Leonel's policies and how he's handled many things in the DR, it is not him that comes to mind when I question a someone's intelligence, we had an embarrassment called Hipolito Mejia a few years ago who thought it was funny to use common folk jargon amongst important world leaders and who destroyed the DR economy.

Baldoria: The "Llego Mama" slogan was not invented by Ms. Fernandez or her "committee" ,it is a creation of her supporters in DR just to antagonize Hipoloco's "Llego Papa" slogan. I hope that you don't only obtain your news from DR via Dominican Today, as some here obviously do.

juliony: Your statements are merely opinions. Give me some FACTS as opposed to opinions and then I might give you or some of the others on here who think like you some credibility. And yes, I have heard of PUCMM just giving away degrees to some (some does not mean all, by the way) folks who have paid them off, but again, you have to prove the things you're saying are true and not merely try to present an opinion as a fact. Most of what I have said can be easily verified. I try not to assume and jump to conclusions.

To those who do not live in DR and do not see what has happened here, your comments are just empty rhetoric. Yes, I HATE all the damage Fernandez has done to this beautiful country. Delinquency is out of control, the police are no more than mercenaries employeed by Fernandez and as for the insipida Margarita. I stand by all that I have said. If you have ever listened to her and you find her to be inspiring then you to are TOSCO. Fernandez is a snake and a despicable low life and she is too. Shame on them both.

Listen, I don't care if politicians have degrees from Havard, Salamanca, or the moon... I don't care if they are Dr. this or if they have any advance formal education. What I want are political leaders interested in promoting the common good of the country and its people. Give me a political party/leader that will present clear views on education, health care, the environment, human rights, public transport, monetary policy, fiscal policy, tax reform, land-issues, etc, and you can keep all those who have advance degrees but just come up w/ stupid slogans - like "Llego Papa" and "Llego Mama" - and rely on clientelist mechanisms to gain power.
