Santo Domingo.– After reporting six deaths due to malaria this year, Dominican health authorities launched an education campaign to fight the spread of the disease.

According to Public Health minister Bautista Rojas, a total of four malaria deaths were recorded in all of 2010, while an additional 500 cases have been reported so far this year.

The campaign includes nearly 100,000 health workers and volunteers who are visiting impoverished communities around the capital to distribute pamphlets on how to prevent malaria and other diseases that are more common during the rainy season.

Malaria is spread by infected mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water, and causes flu-like symptoms that can lead to death.

We don't spend enough money educating people in general let alone on these types of problems. The local areas which see this type of problem need to have the government spray for mosquitoes like they do in many tourist areas. This won't happen because it will cost as much as a new jeepeta for some corrupt politician and we all know them having the jeepeta for a family member or friend is more important than saving the lives of the people who elected them.
