Margarita Cedeno and Leonel Fernandez.
Santo Domingo.– President Leonel Fernandez announced last night he will not seek a
fourth term, opening the position to new leadership for the first time
in nearly a decade.
After months of speculation and lobbying efforts by supporters to reform the constitution to allow him to run again, the announcement is a change in tune from
Fernandez who had said in late-March he was open to the possibility
of a fourth term.
Among the possible presidential candidates from Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) is Fernandez's wife, Margarita
Cedeno. The chosen candidate for the May
20, 2012 election will face former President Hipólito Mejía of the
opposition Dominican Revolutionary Party.

I guess they can break the constitution about education but didn't have the balls to run again? Surprise to me.

Unless his wife wims the nomination which in effect will mean he will still be in charge but behind her skirt!

This apparent sacrifice by LF, can only be considered a selfless move, after the candidates for president for the PLD, are chosen by the members, and his wife is excluded.
If his wife wins the nomination, which could be a possibility due to a lot of hints made public in his speech last night, then all bets are off.
This weekend the questions will be answered after the convention of the PLD, and the master plans unveiled.

seems lionel is taking a page out of las Vegas's book. Term limited Mayor Oscar Goodman to be followed by his wife, Carolyn. The people of the DR must be as stupid as the people of Las Vegas to let that bs happen

I no longer have any faith in this man. I'm happy he didn't break the constitution but I don't want his wife to run at all. Their are very good PLD candidates. Dominguez Brito, Medina and Albuquerque are preferable choices to his stinkin wife. Government by way of a middle-(wo)man, will be even more chaos and bad decisions. New leadership is needed now.

Even snakes no when to crawl back under the rock and stay there. Now, if she, the sinverguenza gets the nomination shame on her. Danilo has more credibility and integrity than she does. I could support Danilo but never her. Margarita es una insipida. I would vote for Mejia before I vote for Margarita or anyone from the close LF circle. He has been the most disgusting President in the history of DR. Thanks to LF the DR is now home to many criminal elements, delinquency is at a all time high, los viciosos andan como dueno de la calle, the police are exftremely abusive in every way. taxes off the chart and the quality of life in every area has deteriorated beyond my capacity to put it in words. People have lost hope. We need somone with some character and it definitely is not Margarita. She is not qualified to anyghing except marry a queer and be his beard.

It is time for a real IMF puppet now. Who will the USA put in here?
From: Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata
It was obvious Leonel was not to run again. Just from the binge of political appointments he's been doing in the past months, it looked like the end of a regime.
He's leaving a country that's financially impossible to govern innovatively. Collect whatever, pay the debt and public service, wait for another election.
It most likely will be Mejia that will inherit the mess. He's going to have a real hard time, the country will be in shambles, and in 2016: Surprise! Leo will be back again. As the Saviour.
Same strategy as Balaguer/Guzman/Jorge/Balaguer.
Nothing new under the sun.

Just because many DR men treat their women as slaves, does not mean Margarita will be Leo's puppet if she is elected president. More than 50% of DR voters are women and if she runs an "equity for women" campaign she just might win - in her own right!
No surprise Leo is moving on - as I said ages ago - maybe to a cushy UN job. That would explain all the meaningless overseas trips of late, while ignoring the internal problems of DR. He has more credibility worldwide than you realize and he looks good on camera.

LF knows the state DR is in, he knows the country is almost bankrupt and he is gonna hand it over to PRD just in time so the sh*t hits the fan under their watch, just like he did in 2000*. then come 2016 he will be back again looking like a saint.
*PRD did not bankrupt the country in 2000-2004, it all began under Leos term, the sh*t hit the fan when Hippo took over, then when Leo came back thanks to his banker buddies who bankrupted DR he gave them all the presidential pardons as a 'thank you' gift.

I m also glad he decide not to run again, But I would said, that I rather see anyone else as president of DR other than, Hipoloco cabeza de guevo, Cause that guy almost sank the country while in his term,,,,,, everything was ski hight, the corruption was even worse than now, the bank when bankrupcy they stolen the money and no one was blame for it,,, and the pesos devalueated was almost $60 to 1,,,,,, I think that putting Hipoloco back in there will be the worst thing it can happen to DR, cause that will be like giving him the opportunity to finish what he starter.
From: Dominican Republic, Santiago
Matador, YOU ARE WRONG about the crime and the banks. It was Mejia's term that prosecuted the offenders and it was LF who pardoned the biggest thief, Sra Lebron. I am no fan of Mejia but there was more money in the street and there was less police abuse. You obviously do not live here and are just repeating what someone else said. Mejia is not a Saint but he was much better than LF. I we have to pick poison then Mejia is less venemous than the Snake Fernandez. Margarita is an embarassment all the way around.

I wish I could say this was good news but with people like Danilo and Hipolito being the apparent "heirs to the platano throne" not exactly a picture of confidence stirs in my brain. Don't get me wrong it is well over time for a change but Hipolito and Danilo are not the change DR needs...
And btw his wife would just be voting for him again...

CarmenReyes - The Police, Customs,...ETC were far worse under cabbage head (Hippolito) The school system was worse and inflation was way worse. More money on the streets means - what - more grease, more coruption, certainly not a better economy.
