Santo Domingo. - Five of the country’s hospitals could collapse in a 7.0 magnitude or higher earthquake, the director of National Seismic Evaluation and Infrastructure Vulnerability Office (ONESVIE) warned Saturday.

Freddy Santana said the hospitals Robert Read Cabral, in the capital; the Cabral y Báez in Santiago; the Mota King, in La Vega, the Sanchez Ramirez, in Cotuí and the one in San Francisco face a risk in strong tremor.

He said despite ONESVIE’s warning to the Public Health Ministry on the need to prepare those hospitals for such an event, it’s recommendations haven’t been heeded.

Santana added that the Robert Read hospital’s emergency area collapsed early last year on the failure to respond to ONESBVIE’s recommendation, based on its seismic evaluation.

We've known for a very long time that much of Sto Dgo would be wiped out by such a relatively high-magnitude shaker.

We are a poor country, lacking requisite knowhow, to address issues of the complexity required to assure earthquake survivability. We don't plan for tomorrow or disasters very well-it is the dominican way! You could not easily retrofit these buildings so, let's face it, they will go down same way as those in Haiti. Perhaps we should concentrate more on any structures built hereafter, rather than heretofore.

Seeing that Dominicans cannot read even a label on a cement bag on how to prepare before and after. A simple thing keeping the cement mix wet for a week 92% hum. will cause the mix to cure. If not it's usless. Also forget any building standing post 1952.

ABANDON SHIP and everyman for themselves, THINK........ What else can you expect from this government. The first thing they will rebuild is the metro, tunnels and overpasses to ensure their safety travailing threw the ruins and kayos.

No, they're not....And right after the earthquake comes "sammy Tsunami"...to wipe out the rest of the inhabitants. Emergency Management has never been the forte of DR, especially when the head of civil defense was in the headlines recently for corruption and mismanagement of funds.
