Santo Domingo.- Surprise and fear strikes the community Las Clavellinas, near the border, as more crocodiles venture further from Enriquillo Lake’s expanding shoreline, in the wake of rising waters, said Frontier Council President Radhamés Batista.

He asked the Environment Ministry to take measures to prevent tragedies contacts with humans, and urged the Agriculture Ministry’s Hunting and Fishing Agency to conduct studies that can also protect the crocs. "We feel that this needs to be alerted to the fishermen, residents and swimmers of the zone, to be more careful near this water, since they could have a close call with crocodiles"

Batista said more than a curse, the Lake’s unchecked growth needs to be taken advantage of, changing the customs regarding that natural resource, and that ocean species were “successfully” introduced last year, which have already adapted to the hyper-salinity and reproduce by the millions. “After the carp now the crabs will also adapt, thusly increasing the diversity of the Lake’s species."

Maybe the crocs will modify their diets if they venture on the Haitian side.

Survival of the fittest..

They introduced new species to a native site??!!! They never consider the consecuences of those actions!!! no wonder the crocodile population grew with more food to eat.

martingarata,
You are absolutely correct - the introduction of carp is disastrous for native fish as they eat their eggs and stir up sediment on the bottom. Introduced species (rabbits, foxes, water-buffalo, cane-toads and carp) have been disastrous for Australian native flora and fauna.

UnderCover,
I assume you are joking,
however many tropical reefs have been devastated by fishermen using explosives as an easy and indiscriminate for of "fishing".

If you were not joking, you can catch crocs better by holding a small piece of meat in the water in one hand, then grab the croc with the other hand when he takes the bait, okay?

Why introduce new species there? Seems like a very bad idea to me.

Trujillo,
"Why introduce new species there?"
Because many Dominican's can't stand to leave a unique natural environment as it is.
Next they will want bars with deafening hip-hop music at the water's edge.
Then maybe some high-rise hotels? (use the lake for effluent and rubbish).
How about a cock-fighting stadium using local flamingos, then feed the mutilated birds to the crocs? (introduce "croc-fighting"?)
Or get rid of the crocks to make way for water-skiing and kite-surfing?
There is very little native fauna remaining on Hispaniola so why not finish the job?
As the lake is becoming too salty (due to diversion of rivers by Dominicans) for baby crocs, they will probably follow Hispaniola's only mammals (Hutias and Agoutas) into extension.
Hey, feral dogs, rats, chickens, pigeons, etc are better adapted to live amongst Dominican litter anyway.

The govt. should introduce Walking Catfish like they have in south florida to the lake so that they can walk to the dinner table. The dogs will find them for you they bark like crazy when they see one.

"Walking Catfish"?
Dominican men can then go fishing without leaving the bar?
Brilliant!

I thought the Environment Ministry is there to protect the environment from humans, not vice-versa!
Kill all the crocs, put them in fenced enclosures, extract their teeth or fit them with muzzles?
