SANTO DOMINGO. - Honduras ex president Manuel Zelaya on Friday affirmed he’ll return to his country to start a social, political and democratic struggle, and thanked the Dominican people for accepting him as a political exile since his ouster in the June 28, 2009, coup.
In a National Palace farewell ceremony, the former chief executive said he’s grateful for the way president Leonel Fernandez, the Dominican Government and its people treated him, and invited all the people to come to Dominican Republic, because "a true democracy is lived here."
Zelaya said he intends to return to Honduras, as a political being that he is, to initiate a peaceful, political and democratic struggle.”
Fernandez, accompanied by the First Lady Margarita Cedeño said opportunities arise from great adversities, affirming that despite that Zelaya fled to this country after being ousted, found affection and total solidarity, adding that the ex chief executive won a mother country and can consider himself a Dominican.
