The bridge in another recent torrent.

BAITOA, Dominican Republic.- The road linking the Central Mountain towns of Baitoa and Sabana Iglesia has deteriorated to the point that residents just wait and hope some authority responds to their demand to repair the bridge over the Yaque river, newspaper Hoy reports.

They said since Baitoa has no hospital, bank or other basic services, their inhabitants must rely on Sabana Iglesia, dealing not only with the tattered road, but also the dangerous crossing of the boulder-pocked riverbed.

Eddy González, a journalist from Sabana Iglesia who works in a Baitoa radio station, said the governments have forgotten those communities, because despite that more than 20 years have gone by since the bridge’s reconstruction began, no agency has taken on its completion. “Since there are no hospitals here, there have been patients who died on the way to Sabana Iglesia because it’s difficult to travel and the situation is worse when the river grows, because you need to make a long route through the Tavera dam.”

González said the lack of the bridge most affects the communities La Presa, El Callejón, El Corral, La Lima, Los Sánchez, Boca de los Ríos, La Galeta, La Joya and La Lomita.

The bridge was built more than 20 years ago and collapsed partially in a torrent of the Yaque, for which Public Works minister Victor Diaz last year pledged to start its reconstruction by the start of 2011, but the lack of investment to fix the structure has subjected its frame to massive corrosion over the years.

Matador,
The DR doesn't care about the DR citizen's money. They just make sure it never stays with him long enough for him to call it his own. No electric, no education,, bad water to keep the people sick and worried about other things than the Governments stealing.

Leo and his cronies are so drunk with power that if there aren't enough votes in an area that needs works, well they just don't do them.

Talk about the Turistica (Pto Plata-Santiago).

It's been years and years and still nothing.

WaterPolo;
I am as much a Puerto Plateno as you.
I always said since Trujillo's days, it is not to the Capitaleno's interest to build up Puerto Plata since it is the Cibao's port of supply. If you look at it, Puerto Platat is 60kms from Santiago 40 miles as opposed to 240 kms to Sto Domingo,It is also closer to Europe as well as to the USA by 600 nautical miles, considering freight as well as a tourist ships wouldn't have to go by the mona passage as well as in between Cuba and Haiti to reach Santo Domingo de Guzman.There by using up less fuel, If A megga port gets buit in Montecriti even if is done by the international community.all the goods from the Cibao region will be exported & imported from there. A heavy gage rails system would be needed as well as the expansion to Santiago super hw to Pto.Pta along with branch paved rds .The capital would become second class city. It is All political as well as economical so as not to affect Santo Domingo de Guzman.
