Santo Domingo.– While the cholera epidemic that broke out in November last year killing 36 persons so far, doctors and nurses at one of the few hospitals in with the capacity to treat cholera patients went on strike this week after a nurse became infected with the disease.

The latest cholera victims in the country are a one-year-old little girl, who lived in Los Mina and who received medical attention at the San Lorenzo Maternity Hospital, and the other is a woman, 52, from Elias Piña province. Health officials said the number of infections grew from 1,288 to 1,563.

Nurse Ramona Rivera is suspected of having contracted cholera this week while handling the waste of other cholera patients at the hospital in the capital, Santo Domingo.

According to Felipe de la Rosa, general secretary for a medical workers union, workers are demanding better sanitary conditions at Francisco Moscoso Puello Hospital, which often lacks water, medication and a system to safely dispose of waste.

Health Minister Bautista Rojas criticized the strike as an inconsiderate act toward the most vulnerable population, while Senen Caba, president of the Dominican Medical Association, said the strike will continue indefinitely until conditions improve.

1) Stop the illegal Haitian immigration.

2) Deport all those that don't have the proper documentation,(which is about 90%,conservatively speaking ).

3) Screen the ones entering the country legally.

According to a very reliable hospital source, the death toll from Cholera is far higher, and is now entering its exponential phase. However do not expect honest statistics from the government, since this could devastate the tourism industry that the government relies on for most of its income.

It is too late to stop Cholera from entering DR from Haiti - it already has a wide-spread foothold, and given the poor state of the water supplies and sanitation in DR, a full-scale epidemic is very likely.

Of course it is only coincidence that our fearless president is staying out of the country - promoting tourism to Kazakhstan no less!

What you do not understand is that if the Dominican Republic, Haiti dies die. I see the Dominicans here are real idiots, even those who have traveled we lied about haiti. The country has also helped you to take your independence, but your elected politicians have preferred to hide the truth! Anyway if you continue to have hatred in your heart you will sooner or later something regretable and I think the Haitian people are more warlike than the Dominicans

If our government wasnt a bunch of corrupt inept idiots we wouldnt have such a big problem. They want people to live in poverty to keep them down and keep them in charge so they can steal more from the typical Dominican citizen. We teach the only ways out of this poverty are dealing drugs, playing baseball or becoming a politician. Only one of these ways is a possible right way and not all of us are born to be great baseball players. Our government is a miserable failure and we need new leadership from the top down. Cholera will not go away for years he way our government is running the country.

seriously folks...I find that this is NOT the time for medical professionals to go on strike when their people need them most. I find them opportunistically unethical....

watcher48,
You have a point, however they are demanding proper sanitary conditions at the hospital - a reasonable demand I would have thought, for the benefit of patients and their own protection. Were American doctors exposed to the same avoidable hazards in USA hospitals, and the hospital refused to fix them, they would face massive compensation claims, and even criminal prosecution. Have you seen the conditions Dominican doctors work under in some hospitals? Deplorable! Meanwhile the government builds a baseball university!

@Roy,

IN retrospect, yes...I have seen the conditions. What I find unfortunate is that the patients are the ones who will really suffer whether or not doctors perosnally uphold their Hippocratic oath.

Like the E.coli bacteria in europe I feel sure this terrible disease is being deliberately introduced and possibly a strain that has been developed in a lab (or expect a worse one to be released). The E.coli is resistant to many non community used drugs such as piperacillin/tazocin that is normally reserved for very sick patients and is very expensive ( I used to promote it to microbiologists, surgeons etc) and very effective normally against E.coli.

Terrible if health workers go on strike as this is a most awful disease and vital to keep hydrated on a drip. Cholera is new to this island so very suspicious.

misshaiti,
Praying Cholera will stop has no effect what-so-ever, but if it makes you feel you are doing something positive, go for it, Haiti is over 97% Christian. Maybe one or two have already tried prayer? Obviously Jesus doesn't give a f**k about his flock!

Each to his/her belief..at least follow the atheistic creed to respect the belief of others if you have any dignified sense of humanistic worth...

Wow, I'm still here!
Who invented the mindless "atheistic creed to respect the belief of others" - no matter how stupid, delusional or evil the belief?

After much careful thought and thorough reflection, would you consider a serious need to die in a car fire while suffering tension pneumothorax due to a gunshot to your left lung.?....perhaps that may assist in your vanishing into thin air....Just throwing it out there......(smirk)
