Santo Domingo.- State-owned Power Companies (CDEEE) CEO Celso Marranzini affirmed Tuesday that energy theft reaches around US$500 million, including society’s upper, middle and lower classes.
“The robbery is immense; it’s not only the high class, but also the middle and low class,” the official said, noting that energy theft is much higher than the Government subsidy given to the poorest sectors via the light bond.
Marranzini spoke prior to starting the work to rebuild the power lines in different Santo Domingo barrios, where he said the blackouts occurring in the different communities result from the maintenance and reconstruction of the grid taking in all regions.
The energy chief added that what’s important is that the annoyances are temporary and will have good results once concluded. “So many projects in the electrical sector have never seen at the same time.”

WTF just about everyone i know pays for electricity, and when you go to pay your own bill you always see long lines of lower class people paying their bill, maybe it just the rich who are stealing. Maybe this is just a way to justify there outrageous high price of electricity.

Unless you have access to the national data stats, I would not hazard to say that based on a very small sampling>>your trips to the payment centers<<justifies much confidence on the matter. There has been an enormous amount of poor overall supervision and systematic theft in the energy sector for many decades in DR. Everybody knows this. The Rich, remember the ex-baseball player Mondesi and his electricity theft? or the many other cases? Since, at least the days of Balaguer, energy theft in DR has run rampant, some improvements and then another bout of poor administrative control.
Pay your share and the problems will decrease.

Whenever I look up into the sky, in the daytime ofcourse, at night it is too dark, I see a mess of wires. Very unorganized anl looking very unprofessional. If Mr. Celso Marranzini wants to be credible, he should start with his own staff. Employ people with the appropriate qualifications, electricians and electrical engeneers who know what they are doing. And who are not your friends, relatives or otherwise related.
Stop the little gwa-gwa´s with the very big and threatening driver an assistant, who falsely accuse people of not paying the bill, so they will give them RD$ 100!
When an employee does something wrong, like stealing or extorting money, fire them, do not give them another position!
And start skimming your staff from the top, check how their work is going, is it bad? Fire them!
I am sure, 50% of your office employees are doing exactly nothing, and getting a very high salary to do just that, nothing!
That is how you fight corruption, Mr. Marranzini, do that, first.

Now admit that you are a fracasso! (failure).

This cannot possibly be true. The Dominican Republic is a Christian country. The Holy Bible states in the Ten Commandments, "Thou shalt not steal." Everyone knows this.

It's paradoxical that the situation with electricity that begs one to "get off the grid" with alternative energy (solar panels, wind generator) who have the financial means to do so caters to exactly the group of clients the power company should want to keep i.e. those who are actually paying their bills and in part those who are subsidizing the power pirates! Go figure!
