SANTO DOMINGO. - The Education Ministry buys RD$700 million worth of scholastic materials which cost more than in the local market, in a violation of the Government Purchasing Law, which stipulates calls for tenders and purchases from national suppliers.

Dominican Small and Medium Company Confederation (CODOPYME) president Francisco Capellan made the allegation Monday and affirmed that those purchases jeopardize more than 600 companies, and cause more unemployment and deteriorate the economy of small businesses.

He said his organization asked president Leonel Fernandez to fulfill his promise in 2008, when he ordered the different agencies to buy from the MIPYMES, in compliance with Law 488-08.

The CODOPYME president also reiterated their rejection to “tax package” pending approval in Congress.

RD$700 million must mean every month or something. or they must be excluding the gov. purchasing USA$300 dollar computer at the US$8000 dollars price tag.

How do you think Alejandrina German & Melanio Paredes could afford to live like wealthy folks? Certainly not off their public salaries. Corrupt beyond belief. It is in their blood !

From my own personal experience teaching at two schools , those books that are purchased and given to the students are not used much by the students . Although my students are all poor , they all seem to have access to a computer which they use constantly and also they all seem to like writing things in their note books .It must be difficult for them to find a quiet place to sit and read a good book as the families are large and houses small and most of the students have part time jobs . At present , I hand out notes at every lesson but I am wondering if i should not simply email everyone with a summary of the lesson , I also wonder if the government should not buy many more computers instead of books .
To me two of the greatest joys are reading and listening to good music and it is sad to see children spend even more time pressing keys on a computer ...but maybe it is just the way of the world .
